ROSEMARY PATTON Obituary

Rosemary Dundas Patton
Died on October 23 of cancer at her daughter's home in Piedmont, Calif. with her family by her side. Rosemary was born on December 16, 1933, in the southern Cotswolds of England, second of five children of Vice Admiral John G.L. Dundas and Ruth Coleman of Minneapolis. She spent her childhood in England and Scotland. After the war, she moved with her family to North Carolina, where she attended Southern Pines High School and Duke University, graduating in 1954.
While at Duke, she met Robert Gray Patton, then a medical student. They were married on October 2, 1954. After Gray completed military service and medical training in pediatrics, they moved in 1961 to San Francisco with two young daughters, Mary and Sarah. A third daughter, Susannah, was born three years later. From the start, Rosemary enjoyed a rich life in San Francisco, spending weekends with the family at Steep Ravine, near Stinson Beach, and summer vacations in the Sierra, where she developed a love of the mountains that lasted her entire life. From her childhood in England, she was an avid horseback rider, and later enjoyed tennis and hiking locally, in the Sierra and other mountains, from the Cascades to the Alps.
Encouraged by her friend Sue Renfrew, she trained as a docent at the Asian Art Museum. She then became chair of the docent council and board member of the Museum Society of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. While she was busy with children's activities and volunteer work, Rosemary maintained a keen interest in literature and writing. She earned a teaching credential and then a Master's degree in English literature in 1980 from San Francisco State University. She then taught composition and literature in the English department there for 15 years.
Reading and writing took on a central role in Rosemary's life. With her colleague Sheila Cooper, she published a college textbook "Writing Logically, Thinking Critically" in 1990. The seventh edition went to press in 2012. Over the years she enjoyed and at times led several book groups, including the Parachutists, a group of San Francisco women still meeting 40 years after they first convened. After retiring from San Francisco State, Rosemary joined a small group that took up memoir writing and published two books, "The Subject of Our Lives" and "Proust, Pickles, and Paychecks." During this time, she also served on the boards of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland and the Mechanics Institute in San Francisco.
Rosemary will be missed by her family and many friends for her warmth, humor, intelligence and, especially, her good conversation. As described by a close friend, she was "the perfect blend of an active mind with a generous, all-encompassing heart." Her curiosity and adventurous spirit led her to explore California and the Western states widely, and also to travel extensively in Europe, Asia and South America. When at home, she always had time for her five grandsons, who each enjoyed a special trip with her and Gray when they turned 11.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Gray Patton; daughters Mary Patton (Roger Phelps), Sarah Patton (Peter Feichtmeir) and Susannah Patton (Christopher Noble); sisters Deirdre Newton and Alexandra Todd; brother John Dundas; grandsons Robert Phelps, Nicholas Phelps, Ian Feichtmeir, Samuel Noble and Thomas Noble. She was preceded in death by her sister, Elgiva Watson.
A celebration of Rosemary's life will take place on January 5, 2013, at the Observation Post in the Presidio, 211 Lincoln Blvd., San Francisco, CA. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in her name to the Helen Diller UCSF Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Yosemite Conservancy, or the San Francisco Achievers Program, 2526 Vallejo St., San Francisco, CA 94123.

I worked with Gray Patton for nearly 20 years in Mill Valley and San Francisco. Rosemary would drop by the office from time to time. She was such a warm, lovely delightful person that we were always happy to see her. Those 20 years of working in the pediatric office were some of the happiest times of my life.

Hard to imagine a world without Rosie. My thoughts are with Gray, Mary, Sarah, Susannah and their families. We will all miss Rosie so much-the brightest of lights and such an important presence in the Dundas family.

Sending my love to Gray, Mary, Sarah and Sukie, and to Great Aunt Rosie-who always knew how to bring people together. I have many good memories of Rosie, but the clearest for me lately has been of a fabulous hike she organized a couple Thanksgivings ago in San Francisco after a turkey dinner the day before, and how special it felt to be part of the multiple generations of family joining a hike to a beach. I feel blessed to have known and loved her.

I will always remember my dear Aunt Rosie's fabulous wit, intelligence, and warmth. She was a soft place to land for all of the children and teenagers of her family... with kindness and encouragement for all. We loved her and hold her beloved Gray, Mary, Sarah and Sukie in our hearts as you mourn her loss...
With love and tears,
Clare Watson Chance (and Tony, too)

Dear Gray and extended family -- words cannot convey the emotion I felt upon hearing that Rosemary was gone. I will never forget her kindness and enthusiasm and overall sweetness -- I don't know how else to describe it -- but I felt happy to be around her, always. She was a mentor to me at SFSU and a shining example of what a brilliant teacher and extraordinary woman can be. She will always be in my heart as you are now, Gray. My son Devin -- your former patient -- sends his good thoughts as well.

Dear Gray,

I have only known you and Rosemary for the last nine years, ever since I met Eric. I believe it was the first weekend I was ever in SF to meet Grover and Stephanie, that I was introduced to you. The distinct impression I had was that you were part of the extended family. You and Rosemary were so charming and kind and welcoming. Rosemary was always so open and curious as to whatever was going on with us, and then the kids. I have an image in my mind and heart of a perpetually aglow Rosemary, smiling and sweetly calling "Well, hello!!" It was truly something I looked forward to whenever we would come up. I wish I had gotten the chance to know her more, but this I can say for sure. Gray, you and Rosemary shared a bond that was palpable, and deeply satisfying to see. I can only imagine the heaviness of heart that you must feel now. May your memories of her comfort you in this time of deep loss. Love, Abigail Wald

Rosemary was my favorite teacher at SFSU, when I was there in the early 90s. I took as many classes as I could with her, and made up excuses to visit her during office hours. I don't need to come up with a list of adjectives to describe what a lovely person she was -- anyone who knew her will recognize them all. When my daughter was born in 2003 and I named her Ryan Rosemary, it was with Rosemary in mind. My condolences to her family and friends. She influenced my life in a number of ways and I will always remember her fondly.

Rosemary, your sweet face is starring at me as I write this. You left us far too soon. You will be sorely missed by all who knew you. You used to drop by the office, always with a smile on your face. The last time I saw you at the Presidio Social Club you looked so well. My condolences Gray. We will see you at the celebration if not before. Much love, your faithful employee, working with you for 22 years was pure pleasure. Donna
