Enrique Agorio Obituary

Dr. Enrique Francisco Agorio A retired pediatrician, born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1927, passed away peacefully at his home in San Mateo, California on June 20, 2011, surrounded by his family. Enrique is survived by his devoted wife Inger, his brother Carlos (Christina), his loving children Alvaro (Bridget), Alexander (Ana Maria), Laura, Yvonne and his caring grandchildren Julia, Alvaro, Jr., Nicholas, Otto, Enzo and Justin. Enrique was predeceased by his son Enrique, Jr. Enrique's career as a physician began as a graduate of medicine in Montevideo, Uruguay. He then spent three years at Karolinska Hospital (Children's Clinic) in Stockholm, Sweden, where he did research on congenital heart defects in newborns. He did his pediatric residencies at McGill University Montreal Children's Hospital and the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Canada. After completion of his residencies, he held positions at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, as an assistant professor and lecturer; at the same time holding a position at the Baltimore City Head Start program as a pediatric consultant. He did his Master in Public Health at The Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene. In 1969, Enrique and his family moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a pediatrician and acting medical director at the East Los Angeles Child and Youth Clinic, while serving as board member on the Los Angeles County Board of Mental Retardation. In 1973, Enrique and his family moved to Northern California where he began his private practice in San Francisco's Mission District and served the community for over thirty years. He was a staff member at St. Luke's Hospital and Seton Medical Center. Enrique's love, passion and dedication to his profession were always evident in his readiness to serve whoever needed him. Throughout his medical career, Enrique was much loved by his patients and highly respected by his colleagues. Enrique enjoyed traveling, cooking and gardening; was an artist and a voracious reader. He was a fantastic and animated storyteller and always ready for a good joke. Enrique was larger than life; no words can describe what an amazing human being he was, a rare gem. He will be deeply missed by all, but most of all by his family. Enrique, you were the embodiment of love and joy and we will love you forever. Memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

i continue to have a warm thoughts and good memories of Enrique and Inger since the time we spent together in Montreal many years ago. I recently came across a songbook we assembled for camp and for which Enrique did all the drawings. I also recall the Enrique was present at our wedding. Those were good days that I still treasure.

He was my pediatrician and my boyfriend's doctor as well. He was the best doctor ever. He would be very busy but the wait was worth it. I remember Millie the MA and now I work with her. What a small world.

Out of nowhere I was thinking about Dr. Arroyo today, so I decided to search for him. Unfortunately, I found this article, I'm so sorry for this loss, I met Dr. Arroyo in 1976, he was my daughter's pediatrician for years, my daughter is now almost 40 years old, I just loved him so much, when I moved to Concord, I still drove to the city just to see him. When my daughter was hit by a car and was taken to SF General, I called him and eventhough he was on his way out of the city with his fam. he came by, packed and all, to see my baby and comfort me, I will never forget that, he was an incredible human being. You will be missed Dr. Arroyo.

dr. agorio was the doctor for all the kids in my family. he was mine for more years then i could remember. my mom once told me when me and my twin sister was born she had a problem breathing. the doctor who delivered us wanted to put a hole in my sister's throat in order for her to breath easier. right before they were going to do it he showed up in the middle of the night and stopped the whole thing. my sister recovered and never had a problem breathing again. he was a good man and from what i remember all the kids loved to see him, he was funny and charming. he was a great doctor.

Dr.Agorio was my children's pediatrician until they became 18 & they adored him; along with his warm smile and funny stories. He was an inspiration to my Son who later became a physician himself. We will always remember his beautiful smile and what a great dr. he was. He will be missed and in our hearts forever. God bless his family. Sincerely, Pietro & Rosetta Fazio

I had the great privilege of spending several years with Enrique and Inger when he was a resident at the MCH and we remained close friends ever since. The obituary does him great justice, especially with respect to his story telling, his humour, and his skill and warmth as a clinician. I tremendously admired how he practised in California. He will be greatly missed. My love to Inger and the 'children'.

What sadness and sorrow I experenced in reading about the passing of my friend Enrique. We practiced pediatrics together at St. Luke's for so many years. He was a tireless servant of the children in the Mission District. I will always miss his wit and charm. He taught me much about pediatrics and life. I hope his family will accept my deepest sympathy and condolences.

Papa, these last few years were very hard on all of us, however they were in no way a reflection of the true loving, caring, funny, and fantastic person you were. I enjoyed your stories, your sense of humor, your tea green eyes and your infectious laughter. You were a stubborn fighter even to your last breath. Thank you for the many years we had together. Cheers to you Papa ! To your next journey... I love you and miss you.

My children were his patients for 18yrs. He was able to diagnose any sympton and take care of the issue the first time around. After my children became adults, just knowing we had a doctor like Dr. Agorio,
I felt we (the community) were going to be fine. I loved Dr. Agorio and respected him much. Thank you for taking care of my children. God Bless.
