Gary S. Coulter, a lifelong Peninsula resident known for his booming voice, quick humor, and charismatic presence, passed away peacefully at home with his loved ones on January 28, 2026. He was 72 years young.
Born on May 11, 1953, in Burlingame, Gary was the son of the late James Oliver Coulter and Rose Prendergast Coulter. He was raised in Burlingame and nearby Hillsborough, communities, areas that would remain central to his life. He graduated from Bellarmine Highschool as three-sport letterman and continued on his academic and athletic career at Santa Clara University. After time away as a young adult, he returned back home to raise his own family, and later, took great joy in watching his grandchildren grow up and experience the same hometown he loved so much.
Gary was known for his larger-than-life personality. Loud, charming, funny, and charismatic, he never hesitated to let his voice carry-especially when cheering on his beloved San Francisco Giants. There were few people that could tell a story better than Gary as he had an innate ability to draw people into his world following on every word. Whether in business, or at home, among friends, or strangers, his enthusiasm and laughter were contagious and made him impossible to miss.
He brought that same warmth and passion to the kitchen as an amazing cook who loved to create delicious meals, bringing people joy through his food. Gary was an absolute legend on the grill, frequently giving people around him the best barbeque they have ever had. In his spare time, he enjoyed coaching youth baseball and softball with his beloved children, and in his later years he shared his deep love of golf with family and friends alike.
More than anything, Gary cherished his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Diva Coulter; his sister, Karen Woodell; his son, Adam Coulter; his daughter, Rhea Rampel. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Capri, Coulter, Holden, and Mason, who were truly his pride and joy.
A celebration of Gary's life will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026. A short memorial Mass will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church.
Gary's warmth, humor, and unmistakable voice will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit and memory will live on in the family he adored and the community he always called home.
