San Francisco lost one of its adopted sons with the passing of Herb Hesse on December 17, 2019. Although born in Chicago and raised in Eureka, California, he was seduced by the siren calls of Chronicle columnists Herb Caen and Charles McCabe and the talk jockeys of 1960s KSFO radio, who wove dreams and images of a magical, fog-bound Xanadu. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

While I only knew uncle Herby for a couple of years, it was definitely a pleasure knowing him. He was always energetic, funny, with a lot to talk about. Rest easy uncle Herby.

When I visited SF 25 years ago, Herb took me on his tour, but I did the driving. He was all "Hang a left here... no, not here... HERE!" As we talked about the city and the music scene, we got to talking about what at the time was the recent death of Jerry Garcia. He told me stories of the shows he had seen in the olden days, New Year's shows and the like, legendary performances that my very own cousin had attended. We talked about Jerry a bit, his life, the San Fran he saw in his youth, etc. and as Herb and I finished the conversation he said, "Jerry was a great San Franciscan." And I replied, "So are you, Herb." Indeed he was. He was so happy he got to see the Niners, the Giants and the Warriors all win multiple titles. Goodbye, Herb, you will be missed.

I'm one of Herb's many relatives who, years ago, enjoyed his incomparable Yellow Cab tour of San Francisco! And during visits to his native Chicago over the years, Herb enjoyed going back to the neighborhoods of his early childhood. Incredibly, even though he left Chicago for the Golden West around the age of 6, he'd often point out things I never knew about my lifelong home! Herb was an amazing guy and will be missed!

I will always remember his saying My illness prevents me from being very interesting, but I will always be interested. He was always a joy to talk with, as he was interested and inquisitive!

I love this photo! When friends become family the sting of death tugs at the heart even more. And Herb was family! He was real and showed genuine interest in those around him, from the eldest to the youngest. He was a good sport, loved to tease, and knew all the sports "stats". He was a presence to behold. You will be missed, dear friend. What a well-written remembrance. Thanks, Hesse family.

Herbie was always in good humor when I was around him. Which made it Oh so fun! to be around him. He enjoyed entertaining his younger siblings, and their friends. I was lucky to tag along for the ride. He was a gem!
