Paul Ware Obituary

Paul Dean Ware, M.D.

Paul Dean Ware, M.D., 80, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Visitation will be Friday, February 21, 2014, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Rose-Neath Marshall Street, Shreveport, Louisiana. Funeral services are set for Saturday, February 22, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Rose-Neath Marshall Street, Shreveport, Louisiana, with Dr. Steve Fowler of NorthPoint United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent's Avenue.

Paul was born in Haynesville, Louisiana, on January 5, 1934. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Centenary College and his Medical Degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed residencies in Psychiatry and Neurology. He was a member of the American Board of Psychiatrists and Neurologists, Shreveport Medical Society and was licensed in Louisiana, California and Wyoming. Paul practiced psychiatry and neurology for fifty years; he maintained a private practice for 45 years and retired after serving five years as LSUHSC-Shreveport Department of Psychiatry Chairman.

Paul's compassion and desire to help others was at the core of his being. He was profoundly optimistic and determined. Paul had incredible strength, remarkable courage and a generous heart. He had an innate ability to find the goodness in others and led many down a road of continued growth and discovery. Paul, above all, was a teacher. He shared his profound wisdom and was delighted when others could gain from his insight. As his dear friend and colleague, Taibi Kahler, Ph.D., recently shared with him, "You have touched the lives of thousands, and impacted the quality of generations."

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Audie Pride Ware, his beloved daughter, Paula Denise Ware, and the mother of his children, Adele Ferguson Ware.

He is survived by his wife of twelve years, Lisa Harper Ware; son, Paul Dean Ware and partner, D. Paul Babin, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; daughter, Dana Ware Hornby and husband, Michael, of Knoxville, Tennessee; daughter, Danelle Ware of Shreveport; son, Paul Derek Ware, M.D. and wife, Alisha H. Ware, M.D. of Gulfport, Mississippi; grandchildren, David Hornby, Daniel Hornby, Adam Hornby, Allison Ware, Cecilia Catherine Ware, and Mac Ware; brothers-in-law, Mike Harper and wife, Whittney of Minden; David Harper and wife, Kathy of Shreveport; Pat Harper and wife, Trish of Sibley; Jeff Harper of Bastrop, Texas; sisters-in-law, Judy Harper of Longview, Texas and Monica Harper of Shreveport, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Honoring Paul and his family as pallbearers are David Harper, Michael Harper M.D., Pat Harper, Kenny Loftin, Travis Phifer, M.D., Charles Powers, M.D., Dean Robinson, M.D. and Greg Walker.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Montclair Park, Bob Savory, M.D. and the team at Willis-Knighton Hospice, and special caregivers, Mark Jefferson III, VonEric McKee, Deassie Washington and Deborah White. Your patients still miss you and continue to remember the great care you gave them! HE truly broke the mold when he made you, there has been no one like you, especially in the field of Psychiatry! Lisa, I was in Paul's 202 class with you in 1984(?). I don't know if you remember me. At that time I lived in Conroe, TX. I was looking for Paul's article on Gestalt Therapy "Doors" Open door, closed door and target door when I found the obituary. Barbara Clark had told me of Paul's illness last year. I am so sorry for your loss. It is a loss shared by a whole generation of people Paul touched with his incredible wisdom, kindness and humor. He lives on in my thoughts and my heart. I hope you are doing well. My very best wishes to you and your family. Gene (Henn) Whitaker

Dear Lisa & Family,
I was told recently about Paul's passing and was deeply saddened that I wasn't at his funeral to offer my respects. I was honored to work with Paul for years at Charter and then at the office on Southfield. He impressed me more than any other doctor by our challenging talks and debates on our shared practices. I have prayed for you and your comfort during this time. When I saw him last and he spoke with me, I was touched with the deep respect and love I've had for him and grateful for his life's work .

Lisa,
I just came across Paul's obituary. I am sorry for your loss. I still practice in San Angelo and often go back to the training I got in the 202 when doing therapy. I think of y'all often.

My heartfelt sympathy to Paul's family members. He was a good man that contributed oh so much to so many. The obituary really hit the nail on the head when it described his contributions positively impacting generations. I too was fortunate enough to be one of his patients in the early 1970's. His wisdom, support, and grasp of what is most important in life had a tremendous impact on my life and I think on that of my family as well. I worked at Shire House as well as a counselor and got many opportunities through him to offer support to others - truly a healing and growing experience. He supported me in going to medical school and after. I truly don't think my life would be what it is today had I never known him. Truly a great man.

When I was a teenager I had the good fortune to be one of Paul Ware's patients in the early 70s. It's always good for a young person to have a mentor to serve as council outside of the family unit. Doctor Ware served in that role for me. My issues were typical of those of most teenagers, learning how to make the transition into adulthood. Paul specialized in therapies to benefit young people in those days and he was very good at it. Over 40 years later I often think of Paul and those days. The value of what I learned from him has only increased as the decades have passed. Thank you Paul.

I had a workshop with Dr. Ware over 25 years ago in Shreveport. I often recall the love he expressed for his sons and how he connected with them as teenagers by playing "rough and tumble" games that boys and he loved so well. I read the other entries and each speaks of Dr. Ware's kind soul. I saw that in the very short time I spent in the workshop. I saddened at his death.

Dana and family,
I was so sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. It sounds like he was a great person. I'm sure the world was a much better place having him in it. The heartache of losing a parent is hard (I've lost both of mine) but knowing that they're in a much better place is comforting. It should also be comforting to know that you were a wonderful daughter and I'm sure that he was very proud of you!!!
