What I remember most of John is hanging out at their home, playing backgammon. I was always welcomed in with open arms from him and Mary!
My condolences to the family!

The Final Salute
Brothers in Arms, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged Hand Salutes as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This Hand Salute is the last that we shall render to John Jeremy Long, III our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for John. To John it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Korean War while serving as an Infantryman in the U.S. Army. John, we commend you for your honorable military service and your distinguished service to the Shreveport community. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 961 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 177 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to John's family and loved ones.

John has been one of my favorite people since I met him year ago-- in 2016 he was recognized by La Tech as Hall of distinguished Alumni . John knew more about the history of La Tech sports than anyone I knew . he was a living encyclopedia about Tech and Byrd -- played 3 years baseball at Tech .
When Tech played in Humanitarian Bowl ( Boise Idaho) we flew out together and shared a room ( shortage of rooms) I was amazed at his sense of humor-- intelligence and passion for life. Truly a unique wonderful man .
