Dr. Louis Christopher Pendleton

Louis Pendleton Obituary

A beautiful life came to an end on January 14, 2007. Dr. Louis Christopher PendletonSHREVEPORT, LA - Dr. Louis Christopher Pendleton was born on October 13, 1931, in Monroe, Louisiana to Velda Leola Long Pendleton and Joseph Anthony Pendleton, Sr. He was educated in the public schools of Monroe, Louisiana. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Pendleton entered Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee, where he received the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery.

Because of his outstanding academic preparation, he entered the United States Air Force with the rank of Captain in November, 1956 and served for six years. After resigning his commission as dental officer with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he and his wife Barbara Chocolate, a Shreveport native, settled here and established his dental practice of 47 years. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage. This union produced two wonderful children, Karen and Scott.

Dr. Pendleton has given himself in virtually every area of our community's quality of life, education, civil rights, health, business, culture and housing. His civic work has significantly widened opportunities for African-Americans in Northwest Louisiana.

Dr. Pendleton was founder of the Ark-La-Tex Communications committee which opened up employment to African-Americans in the broadcast industry. With strong opposition to the creation of the Community Action Agency in Caddo parish, working with leaders like The Honorable Alphonse Jackson, the late Dr. Jesse Stone and others, he accepted the Presidency of the agency's first Board of Directors.

Through lawsuits in the early 1970's, he co-chaired the committee that fought and gained representation for African-American residents on the Caddo Parish School Board and Police Jury - now the Caddo Parish Commission. He along with the late Attorney Hilary Huckaby, III, was a leading organizer of Blacks United for Lasting Leadership (BULL). This group filed a lawsuit that did away with the old commission form of government, which did not allow for African-American participation. This lawsuit led to the strong Mayor - Council form of government that we enjoy today. Dr. Pendleton was appointed by the late President Lyndon B. Johnson to the Louisiana State Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. He served on the committee for more than 10 years. Dr. Pendleton was a prominent supporter of the local NAACP and the organizer of the Youth Council.

Dr. Pendleton is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. In 1988 he received the Liberty Bell award by the Shreveport Bar Association. He is the recipient of the Business Leader of the Year award presented by the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce in February 1990. In 1991 he and his wife, Barbara, received the Brotherhood, Sisterhood Humanitarian award presented by the National Conference of Christians and Jews (now: National Conference for Community and Justice). The same year he was inducted into the Junior Achievement of North Louisiana Business Hall of Fame.

Dr. Pendleton's affiliations include past and present: Pelican State Dental Association, Northwest Louisiana Dental Society (a subset of the Pelican State Dental Association), National Dental Association and American Dental Association; Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors; Biomedical Research Foundation of Northwest Louisiana (member and treasurer of the Board of Directors); Shreveport Housing Authority; Loyola Foundation of Shreveport; The Community Foundation of Shreveport-Bossier; LSU-Shreveport Foundation Board of Directors; Volunteers of America Board of Directors; Louisiana State Fair Board of Directors; Louisiana State Tourism Commission; Chairman - Permanent Review Board under the Diocese of Shreveport (chartered for the protection of children and young people); Finance Council of the Diocese of Shreveport and the St. John's College Corporation. Dr. Pendleton was a member of the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans, where he served in many capacities. He is a lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

Dr. Pendleton was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Joseph Edward Pendleton, Jr., his in-laws Gennie V. Chocolate, Leroy Chocolate and sister-in-law Maurice Chocolate Smith. He leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife, Barbara, daughter and her friend, Dr. Karen M'Liss Pendleton and Dr. John J. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Pendleton, but many people told me about his humbleness and about his efforts in the community. On behalf of the Junior Achievement of North Louisiana staff and board, we wish you God's strength and comfort. With time, may Dr. Pendleton's legacy and the life you shared as a family, give you peace and happiness in your memories.

To the Pendleton Family,

I had the honor of meeting your Father at the passing of his Father, Joseph Pendleton, Sr. I knew that he was a man of great knowledge and he expected those in his presence to push themselves to the next level of excellence. I did not really understand him at that time because of the lack of exposure to successful individuals in the African American Community, but his legacy is astounding. I am the daughter of his only sister, Essie B. Staten, who preceeded him in death in 1992. I am even now more inspired to know that just as his legacy is one of such an astounding nature, so can others be. Continue to walk in the established principles of your Father. He was and still is a GREAT Man. He has left a generational blessing on your family and allow nothing to break the blessing. Continue to inspire others to achieve and to push themselves to their maximum potential. My closure is this: If I choose to walk this earth and my life does not have a positive impact on another individual, I have rendered a dishonor to the Kingdom of God. Your Father deserves all of the honor for being a man of Purpose, Power and Praise. To God be The Glory.

WE WERE TRULY SADDENED MY THE NEWS OF DR. PENDLETON'S DEPARTURE, BUT UNDERSTANDING THAT HIS WORK HERE MUST BE FINISHED FOR GOD TO CALL HIM HOME. HE HAS BROUGHT SO MUCH TO OUR AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITIES. HIS WALK WAS THAT OF GRACE, HIS MANNER EMPHASIZED PRIDE AND THE KINDNESS ON HIS FACE WAS THAT OF A MAN THAT LOVED THE LORD. WE WILL TRULY MISS SEEING HIM IN OUR STORE BUT WE KNOW THAT ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR THEM THAT LOVE GOD, TO THEM WHO ARE THE CALLED ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE, MAY GOD'S PEACE BE YOURS

I came to Shreveport (with the Air Force) about the same time Federal Registrars did in 1966 to enforce the Voting Rights Act. What a force for good was Loius Pendleton in those times! What a positive imprint he made on me! What a gift to know and work with him! Thank you for a very special place in my heart.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

O Father, I give you the Glory and thanks for your blessing. You are the GOD of all GRACE who will call us to his ETERNAL Glory in Christ; will himself Restore, Establish, and Strengthen us. It is written. "My GRACE is sufficient for you, For my POWER is made Perfect in Weaknesses". Grace is the unearned or unmerited kindness, mercy, AND Forgiveness of GOD. For by GRACE we are Saved through Faith. This is not our doing, but it is the Gift from GOD. In the name of JESUS CHRIST our LORD and SAVIOR. AMEN! AMEN!

This is my pray to you Barbara,
