Adrian Bean Obituary

Adrian Johngene Bean, Jr.

SHREVEPORT, LA - Adrian Johngene Bean, Jr., known to all his friends as "John" Bean, died suddenly at his restaurant, Herby-K's, on Friday, July 28, 2006. At the time of his death, he was 58 years old. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at the Lowe-McFarland American Legion Post Number 14 at 5315 South Lakeshore Drive, at 3:00 P.M. Military Rites will be conducted by the 12th District, Dept. of LA, Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard.

John was born in Shreveport on October 20, 1947. After graduation from Woodlawn High School in 1966, he attended the University of Southwest Louisiana in Lafayette, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. While in high school and college, he played bass and guitar with "Bill Wray and the Showband Royale" in venues all around the Ark-La-Tex. He joined the United States Army in 1968 and became a helicopter pilot. During his Army aviation career he was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer. Ultimately he received an officer's commission and separated from the Army in 1972 as a Captain. As a UH-1 pilot flying medical evacuation missions in Viet Nam, he was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal. While saving countless lives as a medevac pilot, he was shot down three times, including one mission in which he escaped and evaded capture until he and his crew were rescued by another U.S. Army helicopter.

After John's military aviation career, he moved to New Orleans where he owned and operated Cooter Brown's Bar and Grill. It was there that he developed his love for cooking and serving his friends. As soon as he received his commercial helicopter pilot's license, he sold Cooter Brown's and began his career flying helicopters offshore to oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and geological survey crews in Alaska. During that period he received his Airline Transport Pilot rating, which he maintained throughout his life.

In 1981 he married Janet Kaye Thrasher, who he had known since they were in junior high school together. Jan was the owner of Herby-K's, an eating institution in Shreveport since 1936. John joined Jan in running Herby-K's, where he expanded the menu with dishes that became immensely popular with all their customers. In 1993, he returned to aviation, flying both offshore and for the U.S. Forest Service fighting forest fires in Oregon. After flying for several more years, John sold automobiles for a local dealership and then returned to Herby-K's fulltime in 2002.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Meikle Bean and his uncle, State Senator Ron Bean. He is survived by his wife, Janet, daughters Rachael Allison Bean of New Orleans, Lesley Busi Rickman and her husband, Dr. Samuel K. Rickman of Jackson, Tennessee and Angela Michelle Busi of Boulder, Colorado; his father, Adrian Johngene Bean, Sr. and a sister, Virginia Bean, both of Shreveport; two grandsons, Samuel Bratton Rickman II and William Jackson Rickman; and his father and mother-in-law, Maurice and Nena Thrasher of Shreveport.

John Bean was the consummate host, who remembered every customer and made them feel like family. He will long be remembered for his talented airmanship, his superb cooking, and his genuine smile that lit up a room. Any day that you enjoyed John's warm greeting, a Shrimp Buster and some onion rings was a great day. He left a mark on everyone he met and he will be sorely missed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Louisiana War Veterans Home, PO Box 134, Barksdale Air Force Base, LA 71110. Rose-Neath Funeral Home

John was a dear friend of my brother Alexander Caffery and I during the 1970s when John lived in New Orleans. As I recall he was initially part-owner with my brother of Compagno's Restaurant uptown, and later he owned Cooter Brown's at corner of Carrollton and St. Charles Avenues. During this time he flew helicopters for an oil-service company, and even once landed his helicopter in our rather large front yard at our residence at 9-Mile Point near the Huey Long Bridge. I can still remember the excitement that was generated by this event, and the free copter ride we got soon after! Vietnam Veteran Helicopter pilot Capt. John Bean was simply one of the friendliest and most unpretentious persons you could ever know, and one of my fondest memories was when we drove down to the state park beach in Grand Isle for the weekend, with dates...surf fishing and drinking a lot of beer, of course. John brought along his ever-present guitar, and entertained us all over campfires on the beach at night. He had a great voice, unique actually, and a fine country music style, and I had encouraged him at one point to take his act to Nashville. I had wondered all these years what became of him, particularly after my brother died in 1979, and subsequent interest in the whereabouts of my brother's old friends remained with me and my siblings. I am greatly saddened to hear of John's demise, and he will always be remembered as one of the best friends my brother and us siblings were lucky to have had!

Janet and Family: Since I left S'port you have no idea how many times I have talked about you and John and Herby-K's. Even in Asia, I met people who would be going to Shreveport and I encouraged them to visit you. Janet, your smile and infectious laugh, yours and John's hospitality, Jimmy, the fantastic food, your testimony of what a great marriage could be, how wonderful you both were as individuals and as a couple, feeding french fries to one of your daughters on my lap, when she was a toddler(Rachael?)--treasured memories. There are no words to express the ache in my heart at your tremendous loss. You and your family will continually be in my prayers and thoughts. Draw strength and comfort from your friends, family and all who care, but especially from Jesus, who will cradle you in His loving arms if you let Him. Love In Christ, Sue Carter(used to work at the Shreveport-Bossier Convention & Tourist Bureau)

Mr. Bean, Ginny, Janet and family,

My heart goes out to you. I have wonderful memories of Johnny and so do my sons. They especially remember a helicopter ride he took them on when they were young and Larry and I spent some of our vacation time with him. He was a good friend and I loved him so. I am so thankful I saw him at the class reunion. My prayers are with you. Love, Linda, Timmy, Terry, and Todd Gordy

Janet,

My name is Edgar Smith, you might better remember me as Bubba, Jeff Hartgroves buddy. I am deeply saddened by your loss. Pls know that my prayers are with you. Scripture that I have found comforting in my troubled times comes from the New Testament:

2 Corinithians 12:9 goes something like this "My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in your weakness". Hopefully we all will draw closer to God in our times of most desperate need.

We moved next door to the Beans when John Bean was 10 years old. He and my John and Linda remained friends after they went their seperate ways. John Bean was always polite and friendly and kept that trait all of his life. He will be missed so much, what a loss.

Jim and Janis Nallin

August 3, 2006

Jan, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Jim and I went to Herby-K's numerous times when we were dating and then when our boys got big enough, that was one of their favorite places. Richard still lives here but Brian and his family have moved to Wisconsin and one of the highlights of their trip home is a Shrimp Buster at Herby-K's. Please know that we all suffer your loss with you and will have you in our prayers.

Jan,Rachael and family,

I can't tell you how much your family has meant to ours. I first met John at the dealership and he almost immediatley became one of my best friends, he was one I could go to no matter the situation and he always had the answer. I consider ya'll my second parents and love ya'll like my own. I can't tell you how much I will miss him, life is short and friends like that don't come along very often, but I am blessed to have known him for as long as I did. I will miss being able to call him for no reason at all, he always made life so much more simple, he had seen so much in life my problems were always easy for him. Anytime I get down about what happened to him I feel like he is watching me and telling me to "let it go". I will still think of him every day and I know your family will be OK knowing he is always watching over ya'll.

We love you,

Heath & Kristina Hatfield

Janet,

My heart hurts so bad for you and your family. It also hurts for the rest of us. John was such a good man and such a good friend. He was so aggravated when I bought Summer that Jeep without it being a "hard-top". Needless to say, within a year I traded it back in on the hard-top. If you decide to continue with Herby K's know that we will be there even more (if that is possible) than we were before. Please know that Carol and I are heartbroken with you.

I shall never forget John Bean. He represented one of the "good things" that I always tried to expose my Shreveport visitors too. Your Friend and John's,

From the first day he showed up at Summer Grove School so many years ago there has just always been Johnny Bean. He was in a classroom adjoining mine, but in the eleven ensuing years that was as close as we ever came to being in the same class. As one of the good guys, Johnny wore his popularity well. With Johnny, what you saw was a person who was as genuine as could be. I'm sad to hear that he's gone, but that's one man who will not be forgotten. My sympathies to all who grieve his loss.

I remember that you always seemed to smile. When I think of you today, I remember your smile. You are a class guy and remembered by everyone that has ever met you. Thanks for all you good you did, for everybody.

Mrs. Janet,

You and Mr. John watched me and my sister grow up, and have been dear friends to my parents. Want you to know our thoughts and prayers are with you, the girls and the family. I will never forget the way his smile lit up the room and made everyone feel warm and welcome.

Mr. Bean was devoted to his family and friends. He coached me in school, I was a classmate of his daughters. I have many wonderful memories of the times I spent on sleep overs with the daughters and all you can eat shrimp busters passed through the windows to family guests. My heart and prayers are extended to family members.
