Randell Prothro Obituary

Randell Hunt Prothro

Chevy Chase, MD - Randell Hunt Prothro, Captain U.S. Navy (ret) died at age 96 on December 11, 2018 in Chevy Chase, MD. He was born in Shreveport to Claude Blanchard and Virginia Hunt Prothro. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Nancy Wilde Prothro, sister Emily Van Horn, brother Carleton Prothro, his seven children, 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A graduate of C.E. Byrd High School, he later graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1944 a year early, as the young class of 1945 was rushed off to war. His first duty was on the USS Hornet. After the war Prothro earned his wings, flying more than thirty different aircraft during his career. He retired in 1967. Forever passionate about the Navy, he once would reenlist for another tour "at the drop of hate".

After leaving the service, he worked for General Dynamics, assisting in the design of what became the F-16. He spent many years volunteering, running investment clubs, hunting water fowl, and working in his garden.

A memorial service will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Maryland on January 28th, 2019.
