As a Medic in the 2nd Inf Div, 76-77, Thom medivac'd me off the DMZ after a terrible jeep accident. Thom was my best friend in Korea. In my entire life I have met very few who possessed the genuine kindness and happiness that he did. You just wanted to be around him. I have never forgotten him and will always remember him. Dear Thom,
I thought of you today. I wasn't lucky enough to know you long, but that short time has left a remarkable impression on me. I will never forget your kind words. When things seem at their lowest I call to mind your encouragement and kindness. I pray that even though you are no longer with us, you know that you still touch many hearts and that you will never be forgotten. Your family was blessed to have you and I pray that they find a strength and comfort even so long after your passing. Thank you again for helping me find my way.

To the Shanahan family, I met Dr. Shanahan at my nephews wedding in Minnesota. I had just been through cervical cancer and he was kind enough to listen to many of my questions about what to expect next. He was a colleague of my radiologist Dr. Small. Thom was so kind natured. I only found out yesterday. My prayers and heartfelt wishes to his family and friends.

Mrs. Shanahan, Michelle, Angie and Kelly, please accept our deepest regrets in the loss of your husband and father. My husband, Leo Savage, was a patient of Dr. Shanahan for more than four years, just releasing him as cured in August 2011. We loved Dr. Shanahan and we share your grief. He was so totally outstanding that there would be something to remember from each office visit. We have good memories and are grateful that he was here to help us. May God grant you strength, peace and love and may that same be received from among all of us who so loved him.

Gloria, Michelle, Angie and Kelly...There are NO WORDS that could convey our sense of grief, sadness and loss, for Thom. He feels like a family member to us after all of these years that we have been friends.I was the maid of honor in Thom and Gloria's wedding,30 years ago and we have been the best of friends ever since...We watched Thom build his career, while also watching the girls grow up, and Gloria manage it all. The fun times at Lake Sara and Lake Springfield are very memorable times for Brian and Jeffrey, and of course WE had the BEST of times, when getting together. From watching the airshows from your roof top on Lakeshore Drive to coming to visit all of the different places you lived while Thom was going through schooling and his residency...We are just beside ourselves, and our prayers have been with you ever since his last day. We love you!!!! xxxxoooo Jackie, Fay, Jeffrey and Brian Meiborg

I was shocked to hear of the death of Dr. Shanahan. His sudden passing has left a hole in my heart.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Shanahan at the Radiation Oncology Centre of Jamaica in Kingston a year ago. I will never forget the first time I met this tremendous human. He reminded me of a Christmas tree, luminous and bright. All his light radiates from the inside out. He was a man bursting with much energy and when helping other people, that energy becomes enormously uplifting, like a skyscraper.

I share in your sorrow at this time. May peace and comfort dwell with all those who loved him.

Dr. Shanahan was a very good friend of the Radiation Oncology Center of Jamaica. He was our proctor quite instrumental in helping us to set up our Prostate brachytherapy service. He was a great teacher, very likable and easy to get along with. It came as a great shock to me when I heard of his death. I will miss this great man.My prayers for Mrs. Shanahan and his extended family in this time of grief and to remind you that God is a God who understands.

Dr. Shanahan was my wife's radiation oncologist during his time at Carle Hospital in Urbana, he was the "ray of hope" in the darkest time of our lives. He saved her life and we will never forget him. In our eyes he was one of the two greatest men we have ever been honored to know, we will miss him tremendously.

Prayers for Dr.'s family at this difficult time. My Uncle Ralph & Aunt Emily Foley have been your neighbors & close friends. Whenever my mother, Dorothy, (sister of Uncle Ralph) was in the hospital during her 11 year battle with cancers, Dr. always somehow had time to visit her, even though she was not directly his patient. His special wonderfulness was very appreciated by my Momma, Papa, & me. Not just his expertise & warm, tender bedside manner with Momma, but the fact that he always supported Papa & me, & told us if we needed anything at all, to call him. At times like that, when we wondered if everything was being done that could be the best for Momma, having his reassurance was priceless, & very comforting to me. So I pray that now you are feeling that same sort of comfort from God's lovingkindness & earthangels around you. Very sincerely,

I was a recent patient of Dr. Shanahan and he had the utmost respect for his patient. He talked in layman's terms. He was easy to understand and pleasant to be around, he made you feel very comfortably in a depressing situation. I am so sorry for the loss and my wife and I send out deepest symphathy to his family. I have never met them, but I feel close to them. God bless you all!

My husband and I were so sorry to learn of the death of a man who was very instrumental in saving the life of my husband, who was diagnosed with prostrate cancer almost 5 years ago. I am a Registered Nurse and was so very impressed with Dr. Shanahan's personal interaction and thorough explanation of treatment to both my husband and myself. He was a very caring man who treated "the whole patient" and not like most specialists, who are not known for their bedside manner! He told my husband had they been classmates in school, they would have sat by each other. You all have our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy.

I am so sorry to learn of the loss of your husband and father. 13 years ago today my husband died of prostate cancer. Dr. Shanahan was a great clinician as well as being compassionate and caring man. He did everything he could to make Tom comfortable.

He also had a great sense of humor. We shared many doctor, teacher and Catholic jokes by email over the ensuing years.

Thank you for sharing a great man with many grateful patients and their families.

My thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Shanahan's family. I had the privilege to work with Thom at the Carle Cancer Center 20 years ago. He was a joy to work with, but most of all, his dedication and compassion for his patients made us strive to be better caregivers. I'm sorry for your loss.

To the family of Dr. Thomas Shanahan,
On behalf of Mick Radio-Nuclear Instruments, Inc. we extend our sincere condolences to Gloria, her daughters, family and friends,
Hardly a day went by at the office without getting mail from Thom. Some funny and personal but more so abstracts related to his profession. He was a world-renowned expert in prostate brachytherapy. He loved what he was doing and he did it with his heart and soul and without compromise.
I could ask Thom a simple question and he would respond immediately and with a library of information.
The dedication to his family and to his profession was unshakable and I worshiped the friendship between us.
The loss of Thom leaves behind shock, emptiness and a deep void.
Thom will be missed.
May he rest in peace.
In sorrow,
Felix w. Mick

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

I was deeply shocked to hear of Dr. Shanahan's passing at such a young age. In 1998 he was the first doctor I talked to about the alternative of seed implant to treat prostate cancer, and he completely sold me on the idea. This treatment has completely cured my cancer as far as I can tell. Each year since then Dr. Shanahan has given a talk at the Champaign-Urbana Man-to-Man prostate cancer support group. I've always enjoyed his talks; they were so informative and positive. His passing is a great loss to the medical community in central Illinois. I have great sympathy for his family's personal loss. He was a great man.

Gloria and Girls - We are heartbroken over the passing of Thom. He was such a wonderful person. Thom always took the time to chat and made even the most common person that he came in contact with feel special, even though he was such an accomplished Doctor. Words cannot express how very shocked and saddened we were to learn of Thom's death. He was an outstanding doctor who truly cared about his patients and went beyond the norm to diagnose and treat them. SHAME, SHAME on those doctors who ridiculed him for such caring. We need more doctors like him! Our deepest sympathy goes out to all of his family. We have lost a great man and friend.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to the family of Dr. Thomas Shanahan. We are very saddened by your loss. I knew Thom's name before we moved to Springfield, when we finally met in town, he openheartedly shared with us his best clinic flow and techniques. Last several years, we were truly privileged to work with him for many patients. His professionalism and patient-deserve-the-best mentality touched everyone work with him deeply. His every patient is assured the best possible of care. He will be truly missed. May God bring peace and comfort the family.

He is now with his God, Lord and Savior a reward he so richly deserves. Thank you Dr.Shanahan.

My deepest sympathies go out to Dr. Shanahan's family.
Because of Dr. Shanahan I was given about 7 additional years with my dear husband, because he cared about what was best for him.
I will never forget his words when another Doctor caused harm to my husband. Dr. Shanahan said to me." I am Captain of this ship, no one touches him without my knowledge or permission", and that was good enough for us. He knew what he was doing when it came to taking care of his patients. Dr. Shanahan is going to be sadly missed by all who came to know and love him as we did.

I am saddened by the loss of my old friend. Although we have been separated by miles, I often think of our memories- like playing hours of basketball and sneaking away and heading to the Cub's opener when we were still in Jr High. Gloria, you and your family will be in our prayers. Same to you Mike, Julie, Mary Beth, and Bobby

Dr.Shanahan Family,
Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time. We enjoyed getting to know your family when our daughter played sports with Kelly at Christ the King. Thom had such a charismatic personality and always had a big friendly hello everytime we saw him. From talking with Thom we could tell he had a passion for his work and felt strongly in what he believed in. Thom will be truly missed. May God heal your hearts and bring you peace in the days to come.

Hard to describe all the contributions Thom made to his profession. He was a true hero to me. Dedicated, principled, someone to look up to and be inspired by his perseverance to simply improve upon what he did everyday. A true joy to be around. I think I can speak for my professional colleagues to say that Thom will be greatly missed, as a friend , a respected colleague and as a truly unique and wonderful physician.

To Dr. Shanahans Family,

I never have had the pleasure of meeting your Thom or you. However, many many of my friends were lucky enough to call you all friends. From all that I have heard, you can be so very proud of your dad and husband and loved one. What a wonderful wonderful man he was and will be in your hearts forever. I cannot imagine how broken your hearts are, and I will send my prayers up that you somehow find the strength thru your tears to make it each day.

Sincerely,

Just a friend of your alls friends!

My sympathy and prayers - are extended to the Shanahan family - I remember Tom very well as a man of integrity, compassion, and determination. He was determined to bring a Catholic High School to Champaign and he succeeded; he was determined to make a difference with his patience - and he succeeded and he fully understood this call to healing and creating. A man of the Gospel.

Our Family is so fortunate to have become friends with the Shanahans during their time in Champaign. Somehow Thom had time for everyone and approached every aspect of life with enthusiasm. We have all lost an individual that worked to enhance our quality of life. Now we need to carry on using his example to help family and friends understand this loss. The McCoy Family

Shock does not begin to cover the feelings and emotions that have been evoked by learning of Dr. Shanahan's tragic passing. He was a great doctor and a great man. Dr. Shanahan helped my family through my mother's brain cancer diagnosis, and even walked her back for the girls in the office to see how well she was doing after noone believed she would make it through treatments. My mother is still alive today, due in large part to his treatment of her. His sense of humor and down to earth approach helped us through a most difficult time, after all the other doctors had given up hope. We are deeply saddened, and pray for peace, comfort and strength in the weeks ahead for the family.
