COL. FREDERICK A. PILKINGTON

1922 - 2013

Col. Frederick A. Pilkington, U.S. Army (ret.)

Born September 4, 1922, in the Bronx, New York, to Frederick and May Flegel Pilkington. Decorated WWII veteran (Purple Heart, Bronze Star, POW medal, and Campaign and Service Victory WWII medal), captured during the Battle of the Bulge December 1944.

Graduated cum laude in June 1946, Hartwick College and earned a master's degree at NYU 1950. English and art teacher, football coach, and school administrator on Long Island, NY. Moved to Camano Island January, 1984, and retired to pursue his love of the outdoors, art, and travel.

Fred passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, with his family at his side. He married May Secor in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1986. Together, they had three children: Patricia Marie, Peter John, and Beth Ann. Fred remarried in 1987 to Mary Derrington.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Camano Island; daughter Patricia (Jeffery Mead) of Caledonia, NY; son Peter (Barbara Pilkington) of Seattle, WA; and daughter Beth (Brian Atkinson) of Northport, NY; seven beloved grandchildren (Jamie, Emma, Afton, Anya, Katie, Lauren, and Alex), three great-grandchildren (Siena, Isaiah, and Keira), and numerous nieces and nephews. His sister, Marie Amelia, preceded him in death a few years before his birth, as did his oldest grandson, Brian in 1996.

A remembrance service will be held at Gilbertson Funeral Home in Stanwood, WA, on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. followed by a celebration of his life at the Pilkington residence at 510 No. Waynes Ridge Circle, Camano Island, WA.
