Joe was a great friend and mentor. I met Joe when I was a student at Normandin Jr. High. He helped me land my first job at 15, provided guidance to get me into college and grad school and played a mean game of raquetball.
I apologize to the Oliver family for not responding sooner but I have been living in Glendale, Arizona for the past 4 years and recently in Tampa Bay. Truth is, I was recently researching Joe's current address to send him an invitation to my upcoming wedding this summer when I came upon the news of his passing.
My prayers go out to the Oliver family and I would like you to know that Joe was a great friend and a personal inspiration and I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for him...

Joe,
We were together for so long. Sometimes I felt like the wife, the mother, the best friend but never just the secretary. You made my job so easy. I just don't know how I can go back there without you. Remember we were a package deal, who else could put up with your perfection !
We got the job done and had fun doing it. You will always be in my heart and can never be replaced.

Mr. Oliver,
I will always remember your kindness, commitment to the "tradition of excellence," and your willingness to do the right thing (even when it seemed impossible). I remember being on the Student Advisory Council as a senior and having a petition signed for Concentrated African-American studies, and the following year, you allowed it to become reality. I will also remember your mentorship in helping me to see what great school leadership was about. In part due to you, I became an educator. I am now in New York City, and although we are now in different places, we will always share a commitment to the future--in that way, we are not far apart.
I will miss you, and I will always remember you as headmaster, mentor, and friend. God bless you, and enjoy the eternal vacation in your retirement, which you so deserve. You will be missed by many.

To the Oliver Family:
Although I personally never met Mr. Oliver, as a substitute teacher for the City of New Bedford may I express my condolences for your sudden and unexpected loss.
I can tell you that he had a reputation for being very committed to his role as educator and administrator and many teachers throughout the system have told me that he thought of his chosen field not as a job but as profession in which he took great pride.
May you find peace in knowing that he did make a difference and may you also know that he is now in a better place full of joy and reward for all his good works.

I am still absorbing the shock of this terrible news. Joe was an active teacher in my life. He helped guide me during the high school years, found me a job during the college years and sent me back to school. I wish to express my sympathy to the entire Oliver family. I will always remember Joe as a private person, who often stated to those he worked with that one of his limitations was that he was not much of a “people person,” but to those of us who knew him well, knew that he was very much a warm and caring individual. He cared for his family, friends, and the children of New Bedford Public Schools. In fact, he was always there to remind us, “It’s about the kids!” I owe so much to him and will greatly miss his sense of humor, guidance, friendship, his freezing cold office, and ribbing him about the Yankees.
From summers spent at TCI to the NISL Saturdays, it was a heck of a ride! Thank you and say hello to Roger and Jay…a cold blueberry toast to you all!
