Louis Hoskyns Obituary
SPARTANBURG-- Louis Charles Hoskyns, Jr., 82, passed peacefully on September 18, 2013. Born on December 22, 1930 in Jackson, Michigan, he was the son of Louis Charles Hoskyns, Sr. and Irene Pease Hoskyns. He attended St. Mary's High School in Jackson, MI and Michigan State University. Lou was proud to be a member of the United States Marine Corps and served during the Korean Conflict. He moved his family to Tryon, NC in November, 1957 to become the Golf Pro at Tryon Country Club. When Red Fox Country Club opened in 1965, he became the Golf Pro there, starting the pro shop out of "The Shack". During his time at Red Fox, the course was listed in Golf Digest Top 100 courses. He was also instrumental in recruiting NCAA golf teams to play at Red Fox each spring. Lou became a partner in Lan-Yair Country Club in Spartanburg, SC. He also was associated with The Creek Golf Course.
He became a Class A Life Member of the Professional Golfers Association in 1957. He was a member of the NC Mountains Chapter PGA, serving as President in 1980. Lou was active with the First Tee of Spartanburg program. He loved to hunt and fish, making many trips to Canada and Florida to pursue these passions. Lou was also a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
Lou is survived by his brother, Gordon W. Hoskyns (Margie) of Palm City, FL, his daughters, Mary Jo Hoskyns of Ashburn, VA, Lynn Ann Chajewski (George) of Charleston, SC, Suzanne Peterson, of Spartanburg, SC and his son, Louis C. Hoskyns, III of Spartanburg, SC. He leaves behind his grandchildren, Colleen Dieterly (Tom) of Asheville, NC, Adrian and Ryan Peterson of Spartanburg, SC, Jackson and Cole Hoskyns of Spartanburg, Olga Chajewski of Baltimore, MD and Michael Chajewski of New York, NY. Also surviving are two great-grandsons, a niece and nephew and special friend Nettie Barnett.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Jack Beck and a sister Agatha (Sis) Beck Sheffold.
The family will receive friends from 4:00PM to 6:00PM on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Dunbar Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Monday, September 23, 2013 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Spartanburg, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Tee of Spartanburg, Mobile Meals of Spartanburg or the American Red Cross Association.

I will always cherish good 'ole Lou'. A smart man, hard worker, witty, yet always prompt and on time to do what needed to be done.
He always treated me as a member of his family...needless to say that Lou had so many friends. He always wanted the young kids to do well...he loved to inspire them. He certainly inspired me!
His words meant it all...good or bad. He was someone that you can trust...because he meant what he said.
His honesty and leadership will always stay with me. God bless you Lou!
Thanks for all you did for me and perhaps inspiring me to be a bit like you!

I was so sorry to learn of Lou's death. I worked for him as a teen, took lessons from him for 40 years and had the utmost respect for him. My sincere condolences to the entire Hoskyns family and everyone who loved Lou.

Sorry to hear about Lou's passing. I regret I just found out. I wish I could have been there with you. Lou certainly was one of a kind. I spent a lot of great years at Red Fox with Lou and his family. I guess you could say, I grew up with Lou and he was a tremendous influence in my life. My prayers and best wishes go out to all of you.

Lou was always so good to me, I never had to pay for a golf lesson, and I even had my own tomato plant in his garden. He will be missed. I'm sorry for your loss.

I have many fond memories of Lou and his family and I send my deepest sympathies to each of you on the loss of a great gentleman, Lou Jr. I grew up just down the street from Red Fox and my dad (Clifford Stott)did lots of work for the club and all the folks that lived there. So sorry to hear of Mr. Hoskyns' passing. I fondly remember the many Saturdays I spent at Red Fox Country Club with my Dad in the early 1970's. I also remember playing golf with his son Louis (we called him Lou 2). Louis, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

The greatest club pro that ever lived as well as one of my best friends ever. He was a joy to be with whether it be golf, cooking, or just hanging out. His pheasant with gravy was the best ever but he should have served fresh asparagus, not canned, lol. I loved the guy and he meant a great deal to my life and family. There is no way to express how much Lou has affected my life. For 37 years now he has been like a stepfather to me.Lou always told me to make sure to learn something new everyday even if It was something simple. well now I can say what I learned from Lou was the love of life and family. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say . I have so many memories of going to lan-yair after school every day and watching him work on the course and him teaching me to play golf and all the Christmases we shared and he could cook the best food . I will always love you Lou. Now take your angel wings and we will meet with you in heaven one day

Mr. Hoskyns never knew a stranger for long. All the many fond memories ~ road trips to Tryon, the visits in Michigan and Florida, floating down the river, listening to Lou and dad "reminisce about the last time they reminisced" ... each version of the stories got more elaborate year after year ... and then there was the new adventures! We will miss you Lou ~ My deepest sympathies ~ Louis, Suzanne, Lynn Anne, Mary Joe and your families...
