Alice Henderson Obituary

Alice Hatcher Henderson passed away on December 12, 2020 at the age of 86. She died peacefully in hospice shortly after receiving a final visit from her children and grandchildren.
Alice was born on May 19, 1934 in Bloomington, Illinois to Harold and Josephine Hatcher. Raised by progressive parents to work for social justice, she attended Earlham College and then followed the advice of famed women's rights activist Alice Paul to pursue a doctorate, earning her Ph.D. in history from the University of Michigan. In college, she met her husband of 65 years, Donald Gene Henderson. While in graduate school, Don and Alice were awarded Fulbright grants to study in Austria and Germany; Alice declined hers to be with Don, a decision that lives on in family lore. Upon returning from Europe, Alice and Don taught in Gunnison, Colorado for several years, then made the decision to move to Spartanburg, S.C. After stepping down from the Greyhound bus in the summer of 1962, pregnant with her first child and carrying an axe and an ironing board, Alice set to work completing her dissertation on the anti-slavery movement. She went on to become a history professor, first at Spartanburg Methodist college, and then at University of South Carolina Upstate, where she taught full time until her retirement in 1997. As distinguished professor emerita, she continued teaching part time until a few years before her passing.
Alice will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother who dedicated her energies to creating a rich life for her family. Every three years as her children were growing up, she planned a summer-long family camping trip in Europe, avoiding the typical tourist destinations to explore unique destinations like the Turkish baths of Budapest, the travertine lakes of Croatia, and the collective farm villages of the Soviet Union. Alice was also a scholar and community activist, determined to use her research and her voice to advocate for the marginalized. She wrote about the pioneering South Carolina feminists and anti-slavery activists, Sarah and Angelina Grimke, and about the women who worked grueling shifts in South Carolina's textile factories and raised families under the shadow of segregation and exploitation. She was also a tireless campaigner for every citizen's right to receive a quality education and to vote. She played a leadership role in the League of Women Voters, she fought for racial equality while serving on the Spartanburg District Seven School Board, and she traveled to the most remote corners of the county to register people to vote. In 2004, she ran for the S.C. State House of Delegates in District 32, raising consciousness about educational and environmental issues and winning far more votes than Democratic candidates usually receive in the district. Alice taught generations of South Carolinians during her long and distinguished career at USC Upstate, and she was routinely stopped in the grocery store by former students to reminisce about their memories in her classroom. As a committed environmentalist, Alice was also an avid gardener and defender of native species. Along with her parents, Harold and Josephine Hatcher, Alice founded the Hatcher Gardens and Woodland Preserve, which lives on as one of her proudest legacies.
Alice was preceded in death by her son Tom and her husband Don, who passed away on October 25, 2020. She is survived by three of her children, Anne, Ted, and Sarah; her eight grandchildren, and her brothers Alan and Andy.

Alice and Don have been our neighbors since my family moved to hilllbrook in 2007. They were so friendly and allowed my girls to play in the tree house and explore the lake. We are so grateful for their generous spirit.

So many memories have suddenly flooded my mind of sitting in her history classes at USCS back in the 80's. We often sat together after class or in her office discussing history or anything else for that matter. She possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of history and a delight to sit with and talk to. Her door, like her heart, was always open and she was always smiling. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Alice was a mentor and inspiration for me and all educators, especially those who taught the elementary students. She was a tireless contributor of quality learning experiences for all children, going to individual classrooms when she was on District 7's school board. Later, teaching many hours as an education guide at Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve, serving as a keynote speaker and instructor for Hatcher's Summer Camps, and constantly searching to bring accurate, inspiring, interesting snapshots of history, human interactions, and nature's wonders to community adults, children, and students of all ages alike. She will be dearly missed by me, my husband, and our children!!

It saddens me to learn of Dr. Henderson's passing. Her parents were such an inspiration to me. I worked side by side with her father, Mr. Hatcher in his garden during my teenage years back in the 1980s. My prayers go out to her children and grandchildren.

Alice Henderson was one of the finest people I have ever met. As a new faculty member at USC Upstate in 1986 and throughout my career there, I was inspired by Alice's commitment to students' well being and to the moral principles of equity and fairness. She was an inspiration to me and to so many others. I hope her family gains some measure of solace from knowing the positive impact Alice had on the lives of so many. RIP, Alice Henderson.

I remember Dr. henderson from USCS. She was a great professor and very much interested in her students wellbeing. I also had the privilege to care if her parents at the Assisted living. It was very apparent where Alice inherited her work ethic and compassion for people. I want to extend my deepest sympathy to you all.

Alice recurited me to the history department at USC Upstate where I became the first African American to be tenured and become a full professor. She was living history. She did so much for working mothers at Upstate including pushing to establish the Borroughs Child Development Center which allowed me to be a mother and a working professional woman.

I can't put in to words how much I appreciated her support. She was a true ally and always supported and uplifted me. One of my favorite stories was how she was the first white mother to share a room with a black mother at Regional Hospital after the birth of one of her children. She talked about people walking by the room and peeking in. They may have thought it was odd but she did not.

I wish I could have seen you to tell you to say good-bye my friend. Rest Well.

I took several history courses from Dr. Henderson in the 1970s at what was then USCS. During my career at the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, she became Alice and entertained me in her home. Our paths frequently crossed as our views were quite similar. Alice was a wonderful person and a great teacher. She will be missed by many.
