Bruce MOYER Obituary

MOYER, Bruce D. 52, deputy director of photography for the Tampa Bay Times and an award-winning photo editor and mentor, passed away at home on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, of cancer. Bruce was born Feb. 2, 1961, in Utica, NY. His family moved to Ormond Beach when he was young. He graduated from the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies in Daytona Beach in 1982. His career spanned several corners of the United States, from Florida to Washington state to Connecticut and a return back to Florida. The National Press Photographers Association recognized Bruce as Picture Editor of the Year numerous times. He won a mountain of honors from NPPA, Society of News Design, Pictures of the Year contest and other organizations. He taught his craft to various students and professionals. More than anything, Bruce loved being behind the camera. He continuously worked on personal projects and shot sporting events across the country but he drew the line at shooting weddings. The loves of his life were his wife, Suzette, son, Dakota and daughter, Callen. He met Suzette at the Naples newspaper where they married on the beach on Feb. 29, 1992. Bruce and Suzette choose to work side by side throughout their careers. And they made a great team; they would have it no other way. His life was full outside of work. He loved football and was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan. He was also an avid motors-ports fan. And you could always count on Bruce to have his camera ready at any family event including his children's activities, beach gatherings and celebrations; he was thought of as the master for recording family history. His large book and magazine collection revealed his love for life-long learning. He was a history buff, had a passion for cooking, and a desire to always excel in photography. His parents, Robert Vernon and Ann Marshall Moyer, and his oldest brother, Steve Moyer, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Suzette; son, Dakota, 19, and daughter, Callen, 17; brother, Kevin Moyer (Patti); sister, Donna Fox (Greg); sister-in-law, Renee Hobbs (CD); sister-in-law, Sharon Kurjan (Mike) and sister-in-law, Sheila Foxworthy (James); and in-laws, Samuel and Kathleen Beigel; and numerous nephews and nieces. He inspired and will be greatly missed by his family and the photography community. There will be a memorial service for Bruce at the Poynter Institute Monday, Dec. 16th, 1 pm. A reception will follow. The address is 801 Third Street South, St. Petersburg, FL 33701. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bruce can be made to the National Press Photographers Foundation (http://nppf.org).
