George Tilton Obituary

GEORGE HENRY TILTON

age 82, formerly of Stamford, Connecticut, and Naples, Florida, died March 18, 2005. He was born April 8, 1922 in New York City, the son of George H. and Theodora (Tiffany) Tilton.

Mr. Tilton was a 1940 graduate of St. George's School in Newport, Rhode Island, and 1944 graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He served in the United States Navy during WWII as an engineering officer and was stationed in the South Pacific. He attained the rank of lieutenant and remained in the naval reserve until 1954. He married Jeanne Therese Alippe of September 11, 1947 in New York City.

Mr. Tilton was a member of ASCAP and wrote several popular songs in the 1940s, including Seven Come Heaven, There's Something in My Eye and Nine Loves. He was also a staff writer for Fiction House in New York at that time and worked on the popular adventure comics, Sheena, Queen of the Jungle and The Tiger Woman, as well as other pulp fiction. He joined Fawcett Publications in 1950 and worked there until 1970 as Managing Editor. George and Jeanne moved to Stamford, Connecticut in 1954 and lived there until 1999.

Mr. Tilton was an avid collector of art and antique books. He loved golf, tennis and the Gulf Coast of Florida.

Mr. Tilton is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Tilton-Wahlert of Alstead, New Hampshire and Theodora T. Tilton of Alexandria, Virginia, and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne, their son, George IV, and a sister, Mary Ann.

Burial will be in early summer at the Glenwood Cemetery, Littleton, N.H.
