Joseph Grant Obituary

JOSEPH WADE GRANT, 102, of Stamford, died April 27, 2010 in his home. Born in Stockton, California on March 24 1908, 1908, Joseph Wade Grant began a life that carried him to Florida where he was raised and then to the far corners of the globe. He finally settled in Stamford almost 60 years ago where with his wife, Marga Grant who died two years ago, raised his children and created one of Stamford's oldest and most prestigious Jewelry stores, Jose' Grant. His life encompassed two careers, one as a pilot where he started as a barnstormer in 1929. This led to his being posted by then President Roosevelt as pilot to the first King of Saudi Arabia, King Abdul-Aziz bin Saud. This was after he was in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Upon his return to the United States, Joe spent 35 years as a captain for TWA. Last year at the Oshkosh Air Show, Joe was honored for his lifetime achievements in the aviation industy. He has also returned to Saudi Arabia which he loved several times where his contribution to the aviation industy in Saudi Arabia and his love for the people and the county has been recognized. During his time in Saudia Arabia, Joe found the puzzle rings. It was his intrigue of these rings and his love of gemstones that he picked up in his travels, that transformed this veteran of aviation into the renowned jeweler that has made Stamford his home for so long. Joseph is survived by one brother, Wilbur Grant, and his sister, Elizabeth Broome. He has one son, Edward Grant and two grandsons, Michael and Stephen Grant. His son and grandsons live in Stamford with his daughter-in-law, Lisa Grant. His daughter, Theresia Pendlebury resides in Tennessee with her husband, Robert Pendlebury. Along with his immediate family, Joe has an extended family in Jose Grant's who have been with him and supported him for many years. His legacy, generosity, wisdom, and love will live with all of us forever. A Memorial Service will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 403 Scofieldtown Road, Stamford, CT 06903, on Monday, May 3rd, 2010, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care of Southwestern CT, 1266 East Main Street, Stamford CT 06902. Arrangements entrusted to The Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, Stamford.

My husband, Ron Everett was selling some of Jose's jewelry. He gave me my first puzzle ring, that I was so careful with because if it fell off, I could not put back together. It took me forever, but I finally got it. Jose also made my wedding ring, which is gorgeous, split gold, antique looking ring, with the engagement ring fitting inside,, actually two rings. Another ring he made blue sapphires w/ small diamonds, resembles a candle opera type thing. Beautiful. I just happened to check out Mr Grant, I was thinking about the day Ron took me to his store, very impressive. I dont know if the family will even see this I CERTAINLY HOPE SO. TY . MY RON UNEXPECTEDLY PASSED LAST WEEK. I AM SO GLAD THAT I FOUND THIS SITE. IT HAS BROUGHT BACK MANY HAPPY MEMORIES. GOD BLESS! ❤

Dear Grant Family,

I just learned of the sad news, I moved from Stamford some years ago and I am so sorry for your loss; it is a great loss for all those Mr. Grant touched. I would have attended his memorial had I known. He was so kind and generous and a gentleman of such integrity, rare in business today.

I want to tell you a touching story : I met Mr. Grant when I was in West Hill High School taking a jewelry making class and bought silver out of his garage. I also bought my first puzzle ring and bought tiny gold pins when each of my daughter's were born and an ID bracelet for my son, your dad told me, when your children are old enough to wear puzzle rings, bring them to me and I will give them each one free. I thought it was just a sweet gesture, but he wouldn't remember that; WRONG...I had my two girls with me when I went in to have a custom design piece made and mentioned it jokingly, he excused himself and came back with a tray of puzzle rings and asked them to pick one out and presented them to each of my daughters FREE! What a gentle honorable man, and did the same 10 yrs. later when my son was 10. I am so sad you are closing your doors on his legacy, the customer service, honesty and quality are unparalleled, he and your store will be missed dearly. My husband and I purchased our wedding bands from your store and I will remember him each time I look at them now and my children cherish those tiny rings that no longer fit them, but will pass them on to their children and hopefully Mr. Grant's kindness in each one. God bless Jose Grant.

Fondly,

Dr. and Mrs. J. Hinson

Dear Tracy, Ed and Family Members,

As a former TWA hostess I have wonderful memories of being part of his crew from time to time. Your dad was a kind and thoughtful gentleman and a friend who will never be forgotten.

Ed and Tacy - May I express my condolences to you at this time. My memories of both of your parents go back to our time at Holy Spirit School. Throughout the years your dad always seemed to be stronger and more vibrant than the year before. I was certain he had found the Fountain of Youth. What I thought was so special was how after my own father passed away; whenever he saw me, he always asked how I was doing. I thought that was so kind. He was a true gem. Joe was a bit of sunshine in Stamford, CT.
When you stopped in to his shop and saw him smiling and greeting friends new and old you actually thought that immortality might be possible.
We have many fond memories of Joe,Our wedding rings, the flying lessons he gave our son Chris when he was 77 telling Chris "I am going to teach you how to land first, because at my age I don't know if I am coming back with you". As it turns out he had several decades left.
Clear skies Joe, we will miss you.

Captain Jose ("For goodness sake, Joe!") Grant was a profoundly influential man, although his modesty and self effacement would never have allowed him to admit it. His influence was not so much in the things he did, although his work in helping lay the foundations of the Kingdom's national airline was more than most men could hope to achieve, but in the way he did them. His immense energy and charm, extracting every ounce of joy out of making things happen, bubbled through into his conversation and most of all in the brilliance of his eyes when recalling his life.
I was privileged to have met him twice and covered his visits to Saudi Arabia for the Arab News. Always passionate about the Kingdom, he was without doubt a fine and credible ambassador. Recognized by King Abdullah as that on his last visit, it was his first when he was his first in 2006 that revealed the depth of his passion for flying and his love of this country.
The DC3 aircraft he loved and that had laid the cornerstone for air travel in Saudi Arabia had been retired and Joe gone, as he thought, forever. However, it had been lovingly restored to full flying condition and Jo together with his beloved wife Marga, were invited to Riyadh to see it once again.
At 98 he was, in everything but years, an excited young man longing to see the other love of his life. The moment he saw the gleaming silver machine after nearly 60 years and standing as new in the Riyadh Aeronautical Museum he gasped and the tears welled in his eyes. For the first time in years, he was speechless. If it is possible to love a machine, then at that moment Joe loved that DC3.The Kingdom had paid in full a debt of honour to an old and trusted friend, and he was simply overwhelmed.
Now he has made his last journey. His monument is an airline that he helped found; his requiem played scores of times daily by the thunder of jet engines in the Kingdom's skies where he yearned to be.
Safe landings, Captain Joe.

So long fellow TWA Retiree of many years ago! Kinda sorry I never bought one of your rings via Joe Koltiska TWA/PIT employee of many years ago here in PIT! Joe was your one & only rign 'salesaman' at TWA/PIT! The only ring I've ever worn was/is my wedding ring to Alberta! I now wonder how many times I remember you 'asking for a top-off of avgas' on your return flights PIT-BOS of those many years ago! You always wanted some 'insurance' due to bad WX enrte PIT-BOS! Don't blame you!
GOD BLESS YOU!
Ed Schotting - long time TWA/PIT Retiree and former PIT Load Control Agent when you flew through here! Amen, Ed.

In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where I live, there is a monument of the first plane
Joseph Grant and King AbdulAziz flew in.
its actually called the 'Air plane' round about.
It is because of his visit that perhaps Saudis got their first baby steps toward aviation.
