As a former executive secretary with the IBM World Trade Europe/Middle East/Africa division, and subsequent assignment in IBM Purchase, I had the privilege to provide secretarial support to Mr. Gerstner. Although he was one of the most brilliant of IBM's executives, he was a compassionate and caring human being who treated everyone with the same respect and consideration no matter what their position in the company. It was a loss for IBM when his battle with Lyme disease forced his early retirment. However, for all of us who had ever had the honor to have worked with him or for him, he was never forgotten and always missed. My deepest sympathy to his beloved family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I haven't seen Dick for 20 years--and that briefly at a Chaminade reunion--but we were pals at Chaminade. Sorry to hear of his passing.

I was so saddened to hear of Dick's passing this week......I immediately thought about Joette and how wonderful they were as a couple! lots of fun times with both of them in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Korea. one of my fondest memories was Dick singing O Danny Boy at our home in Tokyo and dedicating it to his brother Jimmy. Knowing they are singing together now brings a smile and some comfort. Being in Beaver Creek arguing over how to cook 'sauce' is another fond memory I have of Dick! He was a gentleman and a class act. My heart and love goes out to Joette. God bless you during this difficult time. Love. Darlene Moonan

Dear Joette, Tricia and David,
I was shocked to hear of Dick's passing....he was and always will be a special gentleman who made us laugh and have wonderful fun times. one special memory was when he sang O Danny Boy at my home in memory of his brother Jimmy. knowing that they are singing together now makes me feel better. From events in Tokyo and Hong Kong and Korea to cooking 'sauce' and arguing with Dick on how much Parmesan cheese to put IN the sauce when we were in Beaver Creek with fellow IBMers will ALWAYS make me smile. I loved Dick and Joette and my heartfelt prayers are with Joette. Love. Darlene Moonan.

A Letter to our Father

Dear Dad,

You are our hero, our protector, our mentor, and we love you with all our hearts. You helped us through this life from the day we were born until the day you died.

Words cannot express how much you mean to us. Even though you may be leaving, you will be with us forever.

You always put your family first, far above yourself. You dedicated your life to providing for your wife, children and 5 beautiful grandchildren Connor, Tyler, Jane, Alison and Kate.

On September 1st, you and Mom would have celebrated 50 years of marriage. The two of you taught us about love, devotion, family values and perseverance. Your love and devotion to one another has always been and continues to be an inspiration to us.

We are so proud of you and all you have accomplished during your life. You touched and inspired everyone who knew you.

We thank you for your unconditional love, we thank you for your wit, we thank you for your smile, we thank you for sharing with us your passion for cooking, we thank you for showing us the world, we thank you for being there for us as a loving husband, father and Poppi. But most of all we thank you for you.

We love you Dad,

Tricia & David

I'd like to extend my deepest sympathies to Mr. Gerstner's wife, family and friends.

Although I only knew Mr. Gerstner in name- thanks to his work on behalf of the Lyme Disease community- it is apparent that he was a very special individual. That he would dedicate his own time and financial means to furthering Lyme research, despite suffering himself from the grips of tick-borne disease, speaks volumes about his character.

He will undoubtedly be missed by you -his loved ones- but, please rest assured that he is leaving behind a legacy of hope (especially with the promise of a new drug treatment for Lyme disease) for so many who continue to be pained by tick-borne illnesses.

Thank you for your unwavering devotion to our cause, Mr. Gerstner. May you have finally found peace from your suffering in your eternal resting place...

God Bless.

I'll never forget Dick's (I knew him as Richard) spirited, friendly presence at Chaminade as my classmate...I drew my energy from his outstanding class performance and friendly demeanor....our later paths didn't cross till the 50th anniversary reunion at Chaminade and knew what a great leader he had been....I am proud to have known him.......Joe Garcia (Hopewell Junction, NY)

Deepest sympathy to Mary Joette, her children and Anthony Freda his long-time close friend. Richie, Tony and I plus three others shared a rental house on Village Way in Malvern, PA during our Senior year at Villanova. Richie was surely our "Summa CUM LAUDE" ... ET AMORE.... He was not only a brilliant student, but a thoughtful and caring friend to us all. We will miss you Richie, but believe we'll all reunite again in God's house. Charlie Ellison BEE '60

Perhaps the best executive I worked with at IBM. And a truly gracious, classy man.

I learned a great deal from him, and use that knowledge still today. I know his family and friends grieve. Just know he touched so many of us and made a true mark on IBM - and the world - in a life cut too short.

Early on in my career I was a financial analyst on assignment for IBM in Japan where Mr. Gerstner was head of IBM's Asia Pacific Group. He would often come and have lunch in the cafeteria with young employees in a completely casual and friendly way. I was very impressed. I remember him as an outstanding executive and a wonderful human being. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. My sympathy to his family.
