LOUIS GERSTNER Obituary

GERSTNER--Louis. The Trustees and community of the American Museum of Natural History are deeply saddened by the death of Louis V. Gerstner, Jr., Trustee leader, major benefactor, and catalyst. A Trustee since 2003, he served as Vice Chairman of the Board and Chair of the Science Policy Committee where he brought to bear his deep love of research and discovery. A transformative philanthropist, Lou lent his leadership and support to science, education, and biomedical initiatives at many institutions, including at the Museum with the establishment in 2008 of the Gerstner Scholars postdoctoral fellowship program, which to date has provided support for more than 50 early-career biologists, and is making a lasting impact on the national and global scientific community. In addition, the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Collections Core in our Gilder Center stands as a monument to his commitment to sharing the excitement and promise of science with the broad public. In recognition of his achievements, our Richard Gilder Graduate School awarded him the honorary Doctor of Science degree in 2014. A person of fierce intellect, boundless curiosity, and ingenious creativity, he was a probing interlocutor and galvanizing force, challenging and always inspiring us to advance our mission in new ways. Most especially, he loved meeting with our Gerstner Scholars, hearing about their work, and, true to form, encouraging them to aspire boldly. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Robin, his daughter Elizabeth, and the entire Gerstner family. Scott L. Bok, Chair Sean M. Decatur, President

There is no greater pain there could be than losing someone you love especially when it is unexpected. He was the corporate icon as the Chair of the Department's Board of Advisors. Mr. Gerstner joined American Express 1/1/1978 as the President of Card Division. I had many opportunities to work with him although I was fairly junior.

A summer intern in our company asked him for career advice and this is what he said:

'Think of your career one week a year and decide what you wish to learn and accomplish in the coming year. Utilize the remaining 51 weeks in executing on that plan. Excellence in thinking and execution, being moral and kind, and listening well will accelerate your growth'. I have never forgotten thos words.

Lou was thought of as man destined to make an impact in whatever he chose in life
He exemplified the values instilled at Chaminade

A brilliant and outstanding leader. He was also generous and a dedicated supporter of causes for education and science among other things. Sincere condolences to the Gerstner family. May God be with you in your time of loss.

His letter to all employees amidst rounds of layoffs in Early 90s, sharing his perspective on IBM and paying tributes to all those that were let go, was probably a singular morale turn-around event that galvanized many many IBMers who wanted to succeed. As a young recent joiner at the time, this has seared into me the power of honest, straight forward, and respectful communications, which Lou does regularly. I kept that email to this day.
