LOUIS GERSTNER Obituary

GERSTNER--Louis. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons celebrates the life and mourns the passing of Louis V. Gerstner, Jr., whose extraordinary generosity has been indispensable in helping generations of physician- scientists succeed at the very highest levels of science and medicine. With his establishment of the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Scholars Program, Mr. Gerstner provided the opportunity for exceptional early-career investigators to pursue pioneering research that promises to bring new and more effective treatments to patients. Since its establishment in 2008, the Gerstner Scholars Program has supported 72 faculty members across our institution and has helped us make progress in our understanding and treatment of cancer, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, cardiology, autism, and many other diseases. The program has been fundamental to faculty development, laying the foundation to enhance our biomedical research pipeline. Mr. Gerstner was also a staunch supporter of our Department of Ophthalmology, where the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Clinical Research Center in Vision is a cornerstone of our investigative work. His generosity was also crucial in establishing our clinical facility at Lincoln Center, allowing us to extend the outstanding ophthalmological care his philanthropy made possible to even more members of our community. We will miss his intelligence, compassion, friendship, and thoughtfulness, and offer our sincere condolences to his wife, Robin; his daughter, Elizabeth VP&S '02, who served as Mr. Gerstner's inspiration for the scholars program; the Gerstner family; and all who were fortunate enough to know him. Katrina Armstrong, MD Executive Vice President of Health and Biomedical Sciences and Dean of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University

To the family, many, many friends, and colleagues of this wonderful man Mr. Louis Gerstner fine comfort with you during this difficult time in your lives. There is no greater pain there could be than losing someone you love especially when it is unexpected. He was the corporate icon as the Chair of the Department's Board of Advisors. He was greatly admired by many fellow leader and all those who knew him. May the love and the special memory you shared with him show just how much your life was touched by him. Mr. Gerstner joined American Express 1/1/1978 as the President of Card Division. I had many opportunities to work with him although I was fairly junior.

A summer intern in our company asked him for career advice and this is what he said:

'Think of your career one week a year and decide what you wish to learn and accomplish in the coming year. Utilize the remaining 51 weeks in executing on that plan. Excellence in thinking and execution, being moral and kind, and listening well will accelerate your growth'. I have never forgotten thos words.

I was fortunate to be in the Chaminade class of 1959
Lou was thought of as man destined to make an impact in whatever he chose in life
He exemplified the values instilled at Chaminade

A brilliant and outstanding leader. He was also generous and a dedicated supporter of causes for education and science among other things. Sincere condolences to the Gerstner family. May God be with you in your time of loss.

His letter to all employees amidst rounds of layoffs in Early 90s, sharing his perspective on IBM and paying tributes to all those that were let go, was probably a singular morale turn-around event that galvanized many many IBMers who wanted to succeed. As a young recent joiner at the time, this has seared into me the power of honest, straight forward, and respectful communications, which Lou does regularly. I kept that email to this day.
