Robert Curto Obituary

Curto, Robert F.
Robert Curto, age 58, of Stamford, CT, died unexpectedly on Sunday, May 11th, 2014.
Born in Mt. Vernon, NY, Bob graduated from Iona Prep and Iona College in New Rochelle. He held numerous positions through the years in Travel & Leisure trade publications, and was currently employed with Genome.com in NYC.
Bob worked endlessly for his family, who were the most important people in his life. He relished a 30 year marriage with his high school sweetheart, Martine, in a relationship that spanned over 40 years. He was "all she knew" and together with their brood of boys they were mainstays on countless baseball diamonds and left an indelible mark on the Stamford community.
More than anything, Bob loved his boys, never missing a ballgame while being their biggest cheerleader. He was known around town for his distinctive sultry voice, his wicked sense of humor and his winded "boys club" email forum riddled with sports banter, politics and off color exchanges. He was the consummate storyteller, loved baseball, anything Yankees, his fish ponds, his dog Slider and his Flash Golden 1970 Firebird! He could sell you anything and was known to start sentences with "you're wrong and I'm going to tell you why you're wrong" and end them with "what's the big deal!"
It is easy to look back and reflect on who Bob was and the incredible impact he made on those who were lucky enough to know him. He will be sorely missed by his beloved neighborhood gang who incited an intense baseball rivalry, and by the masses of sports fans who were both touched and impressed by his fanatical gift of gab and his uncanny knowledge of baseball statistics.
Bob was a complete rabble-rouser, stirring up everyone around him in ways that enhanced their lives and often left them breathless! Of all the rituals Bob enjoyed, his favorite was his annual pilgrimage with his boys to see every ballpark in America. And many will remember his birthday/Christmas gift to his sons when he spent almost a month transforming his basement into a vintage train extravaganza!
Bob was a big deal on many levels and touched lives beyond what he imagined.
He is survived by his wife Martine, his three sons Ryan, Brandon and Cameron, and his sister Karen Zinman and her husband Sanford of Rye Brook, NY, and multiple nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Fred, and mother, Ann.
The family will receive friends at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St. in Stamford on Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM. Funeral Mass to be celebrated at St. Leo Roman Catholic Church, 24 Roxbury Rd. in Stamford, on Friday, May 16 at 10: 00 AM. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Stevens Avenue in Hawthorne, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made payable to "College America" via Matt Robey, The Connecticut Group, 500 Post Road East, Westport, CT 06880 or [email protected]. To the Curto Family,

I heard the shocking news today of Bob's passing. Bob contacted me a few months ago to discuss advertising with GenomeWeb. We had several informative discussions during the last months. I never met Bob, but was looking forward to meeting him. With all of the media people that I talk to, Bob stood out. He was such a personable guy. During one of our phone conversations, Bob and I got off track talking about family and kids. I learned that he was familiar with my local area and we even shared a favorite local restaurant – the Bonwit Inn. After speaking with Bob a couple of times, I felt as if I knew him for years. I could tell immediately he was a family man. He seemed happy, and spoke fondly about his wife and kids. He was clearly a very proud father. He also gave me some sound advice about the college process, given that I have a 16-year old starting to think about college. I can only imagine the incredible grief and sadness that you are experiencing. I am so sorry for your loss. My sincere sympathy, Christine Mariconda.

Martine and your three guys, Although we did send a lovely card last week I wanted to add to the Guest Book.
I have been thinking about Bob everyday since I received the tragic news last week. It is still hard to believe that he is gone. He was so full of life, wit, humor and kindness. I have so many great memories of our years together at HTI. All to treasured and remember in years to come. It is a delight to see that smiling face above.....He will be missed!

Bob was the funniest man we knew. We grew up together at the Journal News, were best friends for years and were a foursome that whenever together were consumed with gleeful joy and laughter and fun. Martine you and the boys are in our prayers as this unfathomable tragedy begins to sink in. We loved Bob very much Martine. So many Bob stories come to mind. But always the voice. The smile and the hair. We will say our goodbyes with you and your family. You were always our family too even as space and time guided us in different dlirections. We love you dearly. May his soul rest peacefully. And may he enjoy countless conversations with DiMaggio , Mantle, Maris and our pizza and Sambucca friend the Scootet. Tears. They just haven't stopped. Love you.... When I first heard the news yesterday about Bob's death, I was in utter disbelief. I know only the good die young -- but I always think of Bob as so alive. Bob was a loving father and great husband and a fantastic mentor and co-worker in our days at Hotel & Travel Index. He was one person who could truly make me howl with laughter. Wasn't just the joke, but the delivery. Bob was one of those rare people who make the world a better place and teach us that life is too short to worry and take too seriously. My condolences to Martine and Bob's trio of boys and to all his friends, of which there is an abundance. I can still see that smiling face with great head of hair. Bob,you're the sun over the horizon. Susan & Ambassador Mo Sacirbey

Dear Martine, Cameron, Brandon and Ryan,
My deepest condolences to you all at this saddest of times. I could not believe the news until I read the most beautiful tribute of his obituary and then it became real. The world has lost one of the good guys-- You all know that well. He loved you all and he will be missed by anyone who knew him from everywhere.

I had the pleasure of working with Bob only for a few months, and was able to have a wonderful dinner with him on a recent business trip. Even in that short time it was obvious to me what a friendly, kind, and sincere man he was. I am sorry I did not have the opportunity to get to know him even better. I am deeply saddened by his passing and I wish you all strength, comfort, and peace. You are in my thoughts.

Justin Petrone

May 14, 2014

I spent an evening with Bob at a conference in Nashville at the end of March. We had a few beers and he shared some fatherly wisdom with me, but in his friendly, affable way. I could tell that he was a positive person, that he cared about his family and was proud of his children, and that he was open minded and optimistic about the future. If there was one central message to me, it was not to worry and to enjoy things. I am saddened to know he is gone, but very grateful to have known him.

May 14, 2014

It was an honor to work with Bob, if even for a tragically short amount of time. His enthusiasm for his job was infectious and I always looked forward to the days when he was in the New York office. He will be missed.

It was clear from the conversations we had that he was a devoted husband and father. It is heartbreaking that he left us all too soon and so suddenly.

I know I speak for everyone at GenomeWeb in saying that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dearest Martine and boys - Bob was like a brother to me and this is nearly unbearable. I'm fortunate to have 3 decades of wonderful memories of him that bring a smile to my face and laughter to my heart. Oh yes, I've been on the receiving end of "You're wrong and let me tell you why you're wrong" more times than I care to admit! He was larger than life, the kindest and funniest man I know, a ruthless Words With Friends opponent, and I will miss him terribly. He loved you all more than anything, and I could hear the pride in his voice when he shared family stories with me. I'm here for you whenever you need a shoulder to lean on, or for a funny story or 5 so we can remember him well. We were lucky to have him while we did. Love and big hugs to each of you, Lisa
