Verna Shrout Obituary

SHROUT, Verna (Re)
Age 79, of Oak Hill Road, Alpine, NY, died Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at her home after a brief illness. Verna was born September 23, 1928 in Mount Vernon, NY. She attended Port Chester High School. After graduation, she attended Bates College in Lewiston, ME. In 1954, she moved with her growing family to Alpine where she actively helped her husband, Norman, with the farm and to raise their seven children. Over the years, she took great pride in her baking and gardening for her family as well as sharing with friends and neighbors. In 1969 after her own children were all attending school, she went to work at Odessa-Montour Central School as the Cafeteria Manager and served her "school" children for over 20 years. Verna was very willing to volunteer and help others as evidenced by her involvement in:
•Sports Boosters
•Mental Health Assoc.
•RSVP
•Red Cross
•Office for the Aging
to name a few. In appreciation of her service, Verna received numerous awards including Sports Booster of the Year, Music Booster of the Year, Outstanding Contribution (Mental Health Assoc.) and Woman of the Year (W.G. Prof. Women's Club). Verna was a member of the Third Order of the Franciscans as well as a communicant of St. Benedict's Church for over 50 years. She showed true dedication to her church through many years of volunteer work. Verna is predeceased by her husband, Norman, Sr. Her family includes her seven children, Barbara (Scott) Westervelt of Alpine, NY, Marilyn (Steve) Bentrup of Albuquerque, NM, Alison (Michael) Perry of Cleveland, OH, Stephen (Gina) Shrout of Chicago, IL, Joanne Specchio of Alpine, NY, William Shrout of Alpine, NY, and Norman Jr. (Ken Wormser) Shrout of Albuquerque, NM; two sisters, Marguerite and Phyllis; and a host of grandchildren. Friends are invited to call at the Vedder & Scott Funeral Home, 534 Church Street, Odessa, NY on Friday, August 8, from 1 - 3 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Benedict's Church, 304 Speedway, Odessa, NY on Saturday, August 9, at 10 a.m. Interment will be immediately following Mass at the family cemetery on Oak Hill Rd. A reception is planned thereafter at St. Benedict's. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Benedict's Church or Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Rd., Corning, NY 14830.

It's been a long year and today is filled with floods of memories, the good the bad, the happy and the sad. I try to celebrate your life in some small way everyday, but this lifetime of memories is bittersweet. Just as they bring a smile to my face they touch my heart and remind me that we will make no new ones and that makes me cherish the ones I have even more.
Love you n miss you

I just wanted to say my heart goes out to all of you this Mother's Day. I know it will be a sad day and I will be here to help my brother Steve get through it.
Happy Mother's Day to you in heaven Verna. When I see a bright and beautiful new bloom in a garden, I know that's you displaying a warm smile letting your family know that you are still around them.

Here we are Big V. Spring is here in full force and as I see the flowers come up and show their glory, I think about the joy they bring to you. I hope you can see them through my eyes and enjoy them with me. Wish we could do it one more time in person. Love you.

It's Springtime, Aunt Verna. The sun is shining and the bulbs are blooming. As always, the combination makes me think of you.
I just spent a couple hours in Ithaca. Wish you'd been there for a visit.
Love you!

A lovely Mass was said for you at our St. Patrick's Parish this morning and Mike and I brought up the gifts. It was lovely. I really miss you. Whenever I see pretty birds or photos of them, I think of you and how we went birding and you taught me to appreciate the different birds and recogize them. I used to send you articles about birds that were in our newspaper. I feel sad now when I read them and I can no longer send them to you.

One night I was feeling very sad that I hadn't been able to hug you goodbye. So I asked the Blessed Mother to hug you for me. I hope you enjoyed the hug. I felt better afterward. I will love you and miss you always. Phyllis

We thought of you throught this past Holiday season and wished we could just pick up the phone......"brother"misses you very much and hearing your voice on the other end of the phone is something that he misses terribly. You were a great source of comfort and solace to him and I hope I can try and fill some of the void, but I'm not you...I'm not his Mom. There waqs only one of you and we miss you very much.

Verna will definitely be remembered by me as one of the most "memorable" people I have ever met.She was a very strong-will and determined lady who is certainly missed by not only her family but to the many friends and she has accumulated over the course of her life.Although I have not been a member of the family long, I know her and her husbands' legacies live on in her children. My only wish is that I had more time to have gotten to know her before this loss.

I have been in Hawaii and just got word .... Iam so so sorry . I was planning to visit her when I returned so now I'll carrry those wonderful memories of her in my heart
My memories of your mother were many. A wonderful person who always told it like it was, that was something that I loved and admired about her, always there for everyone, a great mother as well as a friend. She never missed remembering my b-day and sending me thoughts and prayers through email, during my grieving. I will truly miss her.
This is a hard time for all but days do get better and always remember that she is with her love of her life now. God Bless the family.

We just heard this morning that "Ma" has passed from this earthly world. We are shocked and saddened -- and we want all of you to know you are in our thoughts and prayers... We were looking forward to celebrating her birthday with her... but it seems that God had other plans. Bless you Barb for taking such loving care of her... and to all of her children... you are blessed to have such a loving mother!
Love to all,

My sincere sympathy goes to all of Verna's family. I got to know her when working at OMCS. We have emailed each other some since I moved to FL and I always looked forward to running into her when in town. Talking about the school days, etc. Peace be with each of you.....

God saw you getting tired,
And a cure was not to be;
So He put His arms around you
And said come to me.
With tearful eyes we watched
As you slowly passed away,
And though we loved you dearly
We could not make you stay.
Many times we needed you,
So many times we've cried;
If only love could have saved you,
You never would have died.

I wish that growing up we had lived closer so that I would have more memories of Aunt Verna, but the ones I do have I will keep close to my heart.

As we grow older, most memories of our childhood gradually slip away but if you went to OMCS in the 60's and 70's, you'll always remember the woman behind that great pizza and those peanut butter brownies. In recent years she still remembered all of us - and which of her 7 children we went to school with. I was always amazed when 35+ years later, she would call me by name and say, "I'll be sure to tell Allison I saw you".

Sincere sympathy to the family - your memories, and the stories you share with your children and grandchildren will keep her alive in your hearts.

The memories I have of Verna have remained very strong since I was a student at O.M.C.S. She took care of me when I was supposed to eat the "right things" for lunch! She was a real hoot when John and I talked of the snake hunts with her! May God be with you all at this time.
