Aloysius Stanton Obituary

Aloysius Stanton

Fort Myers, FL - Stanton, Aloysius (AL) F., 80 - Fort Myers, Florida (Formerly of Elmira)

On the evening of December 23rd, the Lord summoned Aloysius F. Stanton to come home after a courageous 17-year battle with cancer. He was born September 26th, 1940 in Buffalo, New York to Joanne and Leon Skwierczynski and was the second of seven children.

Truly a self-made man, Al worked his way through high school and Canisius College in Buffalo. He then served in the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant and was stationed at Fort Knox in Kentucky. In 1962, he married Virginia (Ginny) Owczarczak, his long-time sweetheart. In 1969, Al moved to Elmira, New York with Ginny and their two daughters, Alicia and Amy. Their son, Robert was born shortly thereafter. While in Elmira, Al was employed by Elmira College and Artistic Greetings. In 1997, Al founded Stanton Direct Marketing in Elmira and successfully served a number of clients throughout the country. In 1998, The Direct Marketing Association recognized Al as one of the most influential direct marketers in the country. Al was also a member of St. Mary our Mother Church in Horseheads and Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Elmira. He was very supportive and generous to many local charities. In 2014, Al sold his company, retired, and eventually became a full time resident of Florida. Al enjoyed traveling with his wife, golfing with friends, spending time with his family and gardening.

Al was predeceased by his daughter, Dr. Alicia Stanton of Longmeadow, MA in August 2012 as a result of cancer.

Al is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Virginia, his daughter, Amy (Howard) Phillips of Hickory, North Carolina, his son, Robert (Heather) Stanton of Elmira, NY. Al was proud of his seven grandchildren: Michael Phillips of Corning, NY; Kristen (Claude) O'Connor of Thomasville, NC; Alyssa (Sean) McAlarney of Asheville, NC; Eric Mau of Denver, CO; Evan Mau of Longmeadow, MA; Philip Stanton and Christopher Stanton of Elmira, NY; as well as two Great-Grandchildren: Claude IV and Beck O'Connor of Thomasville, NC. Al is also survived by his three sisters, Florence (Richard) Skrok of Austin, TX; Rita Geller of Buffalo, NY and Christine Mitchell of Buffalo, NY. Earlier this year, Al's older brother, Richard Skwierczynski of Buffalo, NY passed away as a result of cancer. Two of his other siblings died as infants. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the Spring in Elmira, NY at a date and time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in his memory by going to www.dana-farber.org and choosing the "Give Now" link.

My thoughts and prayers to Ginny and her family. I knew Al & Ginny before I moved to Syracuse in 1983. We were all active in St Mary Our Mother Church. May your many memories keep Al alive in your hearts. He will never be far away. My love to you all.
