William Purdom Obituary

WILLIAM "BILL" SCAHILL PURDOM William "Bill" Scahill Purdom, 62, of Wilmington, NC passed away Thursday, June 30, 2016 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born October 27, 1953 in Charleston, West Virginia, the son of the late John Lucian Purdom and Jeanne Britt Purdom. Bill grew up in Wyoming, Ohio and attended Wyoming High School and then Auburn University where he studied visual design. The next 19 years were spent working and living in New York City. His work at the Whistl`n Dixie Studio for Bloomingdales gained him international acclaim. This notoriety allowed him to be self-employed. Used by every major advertising agency in New York, Bill has also illustrated billboards, movie posters, album covers and worked on national campaigns for Mercedes Benz, Nikon, Panasonic, American Express, and the three major television networks. He was the first artist allowed by Steven Spielberg to paint "E.T." (in a national campaign for McDonald's). While living in New York he was a major contributor to The New York Times and his work appeared in many national magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, Fortune, Time, Esquire, Sport, and National Lampoon. In NYC, Bill was on the Board of Directors of the American Museum of Illustration and the Society of Illustrators. After 12 years of award winning advertising and editorial illustration, Bill switched his focus to fine arts. Since 1989 he has painted to date 121 great moments in baseball, including 10 first pitch paintings of the new MLB ballparks. His baseball lithographs have been seen on the hit television shows "Seinfeld," "Arliss," "Eight Simple Rules," "Everybody Loves Raymond," and in the Oscar nominated movie "Moneyball." His originals hang in private collections worldwide and 102 lithos of his paintings are in the permanent collection of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Bill has done lithographs for the NBA, NFL, NHL, NCAA, and (thoroughbreds for) the Saratoga Raceway. Bill is the most prolific artist in the history of the Topps Co., Inc. To date he has painted 340 baseball, football, and basketball cards. Bill is the only artist who has been licensed by Dale Earnhardt, Inc. to commemorate the racing legend. On QVC, when presented on air, his 80 card set telling the life story of Dale Earnhardt sold 18,000 units in 15 minutes. His stein celebrating the life of Dale Earnhardt completely sold out, as did his framed lithograph of the great driver, which sold 54,000 units in 24 hours. Due to Bill's uncanny ability to capture likenesses, his portraits are highly prized and in great demand. Bill was a technical advisor for Billy Crystal's Mantle and Maris movie "61*" and the documentary "Hano". On the fiftieth anniversary of Jackie Robinson's debut, MLB handed out 250,000 copies of Bill's painting of that special moment to lucky fans in Major League ballparks across America. When they won their first World Championship in 86 years, the Red Sox selected Bill to paint and market a limited edition lithograph that is the definitive visual statement of their miraculous season. Similar projects ensued with the World Champion Steelers and the Baltimore Colts 1958 World Champions 50th Reunion. In 2006 The Cincinnati Reds and National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum both chose Bill to create ongoing fine art litho programs celebrating their respective classic moments. The families of Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson picked Bill to paint their legendary ancestors. Next came Purdom paintings to celebrate the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Reds Hall of Fame and the San Francisco Giants. In 2008 every Reds ticket featured a painting by Bill, the first time in history that every game day ticket has utilized fine art. In 2009, Bill was chosen to officially paint the last pitch at the old Yankee Stadium and the first pitch at the new Yankee Stadium. Bill is the latest artist to be chosen by the U.S. Department of State to have his work hung in U.S. Embassies around the world. When the Dallas Cowboys built their new stadium they asked Bill to do 2 paintings of it. Immediately after that the NBHOF asked Bill to paint the definitive 1912 Fenway Park image to celebrate the storied ballpark's 100th Anniversary. Arnold Palmer chose Bill to create a series of paintings/lithos to celebrate the great moments in the golfing legend's career. This year, the L.A. Dodgers became the latest team to start collecting Bill's originals (including 4 4'x6' murals) for their stadium luxury suites. The NBHOF chose Bill to create the "Official Painting" celebrating their 75th Anniversary. Bill was an avid reader, he loved history, antiques, art, sports. He was a member of Saint Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church, a member of the Civil War Round Table in NYC, member of The Surf Club, and a former member of the Civitan Club. Surviving are his wife, Lisa G Purdom; son, William S Purdom Jr. of The United States Naval Academy; brother, John L Purdom Jr.; sister in law, Debbie G Purdom; niece, Gibson Purdom Arling; and nephew, John L Purdom lll. It's hard to believe that it's been 7 years since you left us. Memories of your kindness and infectious laughter will live on forever. I miss you my friend.

Can't believe it's been four years. Bill and I became buddies after meeting through our kids attending the same school. We then found out we had many things in common, including working with art and imagery associated with the professional sports leagues, particularly Major League Baseball, golf, and other sports. I found that his art and its status within the collector's and licensing communities had become legendary, and after being in his studio numerous times in the few years prior to his untimely passing, witnessed first hand why it had become just that. What made our relationship even more meaningful was our mutual love of baseball and its history, that he so meticulously commemorated in his paintings. Spending time in his studio was very much like being in a fine arts sports museum, with live "chat!" I have three of Bill's small originals of Eagle Point golf holes (Wells Fargo tournament played there a few years ago) that I cherish. Bill holds a special place in my memory, that I trust will never fade.

I only found out about Bill's passing yesterday while visiting Bill's former dentist in Mendham, NJ, Dr. Donald Callahan, who was a great fan of his. Those of us who "knew him when" are shocked and saddened at his untimely passing. He was an unforgettable, fun, talented and altogether nice person. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy along with that of all the Berner family from Lowery Lane. A bright light has gone out in the world.

Lisa, I just recently became aware of Bill's passing. I'm not sure if you remember me, but I was an AD at The New York Times when I met Bill, (sometime in the early 80's). From day one, it was a delight to know him. We collaborated on so many memorable projects, and shared countless unforgettable adventures. He will always be in my Mt. Rushmore of fabulous personalities and one-of-a-kind geniuses. Please accept my sincere, if belated, sorrow and condolences for your loss. Emil

I first became aware of bill purdom about 20 yrs ago and started buying 12-14 paintings of his baseball art and finally got the nerve to call him on then phone twice in the last 5-6 yrs and we spoke for about 45 min each time. We were both born in 1953 and both lefties. Just a great guy and even tho we never met, I considered him a friend and i will miss him a lot.

I used to help Bill copy reference photos. He was an extremely talented man. I hadn't seen him in a while but when I noticed him at a local diner we had a great conversation about work and life. He will be missed.

You never know how you will touch someone's life. I met Bill years ago when I coached his son in T-ball at the YMCA when he was knee high to a junebug. I remember speaking with him a few times about his career and he shared with me a poster of his drawing of Ernie Banks 500th HR. His kindness and consideration will be something I take with me as I reflect upon his short life. May these stories left here bring a bright spot during this time of mourning. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

To: Billy and brother Johnny. I tried to send a mesage but I am not sure it was sent.I am sorry for the loss of your Dad Billy. He was very proud of all that you vae accomplished on the athletic field and in the class room, at the Naval Academy. Your Dad had an incredible talent as an artist.I had him do a painting of Jim Justice the owner of the Greenbrier, his father, Sam Snead and Jerry West standing on the first Tee of The Old White Golf Course. We presented the painting to Jim on Sunday night following the the first PGA Greenbrier Classic. Jerry WEst was also at the banquet and Bill got to talk to Jerry who was one of his boyhood idols. Bill was thrilled. We all know what a great talent he had as an artist, but he also was an All American as a person. We will all miss him and Billy you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers Paul Moran

Though we did not know Mr. Purdom personally, my dear husband has purchased his "Hallowed Ground" calendars for at least 20 years...he always bought them for my dad and brothers in law, never himself. We'd always be happy to receive the reminder postcard in late summer/early fall and then the flat envelop of beautiful calendars before Christmas every year. The men would always open at same time and so enjoy finding their new favorite drawing...such a wonderful tradition and celebration in our family. We deeply appreciate Mr. Purdom sharing his considerable gifts with the world, but more so our family. May God rest your soul, sir and comfort your family at this very sad time. We will be praying for all of you.

Dear Billy and Lisa, My heart goes out to you at this time. Bill was so witty and entertaining. Always had a funny story to share. I'm extremely grateful that I could call Bill a friend for the past ten years. Not only was Bill one of the most remarkable talents in all genres of art in this or any country, he displayed humility foreign to most who are at the very top of their fields. I will miss working with him, solving the problems of the world over our breakfasts at Ezell's, our spirited discussions on sports and music, lunch outside at the Surf Club, and his very proud updates on Billy's journey at The Naval Academy. The world has lost a great man and dad, but his art will live on forever.

Bill was a wonderful person and was loved by many. He probably had more, "really good friends " than anyone I knew. You definitely liked Bill as soon as you would meet him for the first time, he seemed to always be in a good mood no matter what was going on. He was always working on his artwork of all sports. If you were fortunate enough to see his work you could easily see how good at it he was and why he was known for it too. He will be very much missed by not only his family but by everyone that knew him. My condolences go out to the whole family. Bill is now with God and looking down at us with his smile and wanting us to get on with our lives or, "play ball"!!! He always wanted the best for you. God bless and rest in peace.
