Joe Cook Obituary

Joe L. Cook Joe L. Cook, who was lovingly known by his family as Daddy Joe entered his final resting place Friday, May 24th, 2013 at the age of 79. He was a big-hearted, jolly man who was a deeply-loved and respected husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother and friend. Joe was never without a smile, wave or happy thing to say to everyone. He was born July 1st, 1933 to Oran and Opal Cook in Grimes County Texas. Joe graduated from Navasota High School in 1952 and soon went to work as an electrician at Gulf State Utility Company. In 1954 Joe joined the United States Navy and proudly served on the USS Gypsy ARSD-1 and USS Mt. Baker. On December 29th, 1955 he married his bride, Elizabeth Synnott. They started their married life together in California where their first son, Van, was born. Joe served in the Navy for four years, until 1957 receiving an Honorable Discharge and moved his family back to Texas. In the next few years they welcomed their sons, Wade and Dale. In 1961 they moved to the little community of Garfield Texas where they began farming and ranching and a wonderful and happy life for his family! Joe resided in Garfield Texas for the past 52 years and has made a long-lasting impact on all of the people he has touched in his life. Joe Cook's name and memories will not be forgotten. He was very well known in our town as a self-employed businessman: Joe Cook Hauling. Everyone knew his friendly smile, the site of his truck up and down the road and certainly enjoyed his stories. And he TRULY enjoyed every person and conversation over coffee, supper or a hand of cards. Joe loved to go check the cows, putt around on his old tractor and of course head to Louisiana. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Cook; son Van Cook; son and daughter-in-law Wade and Joanie Cook, son and daughter-in-law Dale and Anita Cook; grandchildren Carolyn Cook Clay, Thomas Cook, Samantha Goertz, William Cook, Nicole Cook, Daniel Cook, Trenton Cook and Kaitlyn Cook; great-grandchildren Makenna Watson, Nathan Ollis, Jessa Clay, Saffryn Cook, Jackson Ollis and dear sisters Sandra Rotello and Ellen Dyer and family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and many of aunts, uncles and cousins. The family will receive friends at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home on Monday May 27th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 28th, 2013 at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home, Bastrop, Texas.

I talked to Elizabeth today and just found out about Joe's passing. I am so sorry for the loss of this wonderful man. He was a long-time friend of my parents, Leonard and Lillian Vandermast, sharing many good times and sorrows alike. I pray for peace for Elizabeth and the family. Joe will be missed but is now home with God, Christ, and many of his family and friends who have passed before him, including my parents. Love will surround him for eternity.

My sincere condolences to Joe's family. A huge loss. What a wonderful man. I just loved his sense of humor and that smile that always made you feel like you were his best friend. They just don't make many Joe Cooks in one lifetime and I feel fortunate we were able to cross paths in this one. He will truly be missed.

I know the family is comforted by the way Joe lived his life fully every day, but the roads of Bastrop County will never be the same without Joe Cook a-hauling and a-hauling, seems like there was at least 3 of him you saw him so often.

My sincere condolences to the family.

Our condolences to the Cook Family on their loss. Joe was a great friend of the Family. So many memories and thoughts on how we met the Family and our times as neighbors. Joe you will be missed and I know you're driving that new truck in heaven looking for a diner. I bet God just needed another trucker to haul things around.
