Alvin DeVane Obituary

Alvin Earl DeVane Alvin Earl DeVane was born in Elba, Alabama on November 2, 1923 and passed away peacefully on January 1, 2012. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as a radio operator on a C-47 in the Pacific Theatre. Sgt. DeVane was assigned to the 318th Troop Carrier Squadron (Commando), 3rd Air Commando Group. He met his future wife and found a new home in Austin, Texas while stationed at Bergstrom AFB. His 26-year career with the Austin Police Department began in 1957 where he enjoyed serving the city's constituents, finally retiring as the Lieutenant of the traffic division. One of his favorite duties was coordinating security and escorts for visiting dignitaries. He loved interacting with the public while working traffic at festivals, parades and Longhorn football games. There was a special place in his heart for Vincent R. DiNino's University of Texas Longhorn Band. Lt. DeVane spent his career ensuring the citizens and streets of his beloved Austin were safe and was overwhelmed when Alvin DeVane Blvd was named in his honor, stating "There will always be a part of me in Austin, Texas." Alvin enjoyed his leisure time traveling, singing & listening to Barbershop music, watching the Longhorns, operating his ham radios and spending time with his family and many friends. He was preceded in death by Toni DeVane, his wife of 67 years. He is survived by four children, seven grandchildren, and their spouses: Alvin & Candace DeVane, Teresa & Curtis Crail, Lisa & Mark Fisch and John & Kimberly DeVane. Bradley & Paige Crail, Thomas Crail, Jaycie DeVane, Alyssa DeVane, Gracie DeVane, Suzanne DeVane and Jonathan DeVane. Visitation will be at 6:30 p.m. with a Rosary service beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at St. Louis Catholic Church followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery. I just saw Alvin last Friday and we had a wonderful visit as always. He and Toni were wonderful church friends to me when I joined St. Louis, and they continued to inspire me with their enduring love and compassion for others. I am so sad to lose them, but I am so happy they are together again in heaven. Peace be with you during this time of loss. Love in Christ to the DeVane family.

Lt DeVane was an active band parent when my husband, Charles, directed the Lanier HS band; when Charles passed away, Lt DeVane led the funeral procession to Austin Memorial Cemetery, and had arranged for two rows of police officers to line up and salute the hearse at the entrance. That was so meaningful and touching that I still tear up when I remember. What a dear, thoughtful, kind man!

Lt DeVane was a long time personal friend as well as parent of his children in my tenure as The University of Texas Longhorn Band Director! He was kind and gentle and yet did his police job by the book!!! We loved him and admired him and I know he will ve welcomed to the next world ! We all have lost a fine fine man!!!

Alvin will be missed by so many in ham radio and the music world that love Barbershop singing. The Police Department had a great model to go by. May God Bless The family at this time of their loss.

Lisa and the rest of the DeVane family,

Words seem so empty at times like this, yet it is our hope that ours will give you some comfort, spark some joy and bring warmth to your world as you walk through the next days, weeks and months. God has given us memories for times such as this so draw on those times of laughter, excitement and joy that you shared together - it is those memories that will grow brighter and give you comfort as time passes.

We are deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Rhonda and I extend through the miles a heartfelt hug and a smile. It is our prayer that there will be many friends and family that come alongside you at this time.

May Isaiah 40:28-31 give you hope and strength to meet the challenge ahead.

"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

We know Alvin and Toni are enjoying their new angel wings!

Lt. Devane was one of the finest gentlemen I ever had the privilege of knowing. He was so helpful and caring of people and really helped me a lot over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in their double loss.

Alvin, Teri, John and Lisa, you have lost a great man. I will miss my visits with him. He was always very gracious and nice to me as was your mother. We had great conversations about old time policing and of course The Longhorn Band! He loved the Longhorn Band. I will miss his standard answer to "how you doing?" "still kicking, just not very high". He will be greatly missed by so many people whose lives he has touched. Of there is anything you need don't hesitate to call. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and your family.
