Fred DUARTE Obituary

DUARTE Jr., Fred
Fred Duarte Jr., 58, fell asleep for the final time never to awaken on October 3rd, 2015 after a long illness. Fred was born on June 29, 1957 in San Antonio, Texas to Fred Sr. and Esperanza Gonzales Duarte. The child of an Air Force family, Fred moved frequently, with stops in Texas, Mississippi, Colorado, Chile, California, and Missouri.

During his life he was an active member of both The Fandom Association of Central Texas and Alamo Literary Arts Maintenance Organization, holding numerous positions for more than three decades. Both groups were 501(c) literary non for profit organizations.

He happily volunteered his time with Boy Scout Troop 413, hosted by Redeemer Lutheran Church, Austin as his son, Matthew Frederick Meschke Duarte, was a member and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout, for which Fred was very proud.

Fred had recently retired from the Federal Government after more than three decades of service, mostly in Austin at the Internal Revenue Service.

He is survived by his son, Matthew Frederick Meschke Duarte (Washington, DC), sisters Teresa Duarte (Apache Junction, AZ) and Maria Elena Duarte (Round Rock), brothers Robert Duarte (Austin) and Mark Edward Duarte (Alexandria, VA), mother Esperanza Duarte (Cedar Park), and father Fred Duarte, Sr. (Greenvalley, AZ). He is preceded in death by his first born son, Frederick Helmuth Duarte, who passed quickly after birth.

Fred was a lifetime reader-particularly of science fiction and fantasy-sports fan (he adored baseball), enjoyed all types of music, and was a loyal friend to many and possessed a wicked sense of humor.

Memorial Services will be held at St Paul Lutheran Church, 3407 Red River Road, Austin, Texas, on Saturday, the 10th of October at 11:00 am. A light lunch will be held immediately afterward in the Fellowship Hall.

Memorials may be sent in Fred's honor to the Austin Public Library.

Fred was always there to smile and help out. And we shared not only a love of science fiction but also being IRS employees. RIP, Fred.

Matthew and family - there will be a large hole in SF fandom with Fred's passing. He brought a lot of smiles in his lifetime. So sorry for your loss. Cindy and Brad Foster
