The Oregon State University Master Gardeners of Marion County remember Dick's leadership in many Chapter activities including: Executive Board Member, State Representative, Speakers Bureau and Publicity Chair. Dick also served on the planning and steering committees for the Chapter's very first (and now annual) Plant Sale and the l989 International Master Gardener Conference that was held in Portland OR. Over the years, Dick planned reunions to keep in touch with his fellow Master Gardener 1986 classmates.

Dick was an amazing man. Many years ago he was a good friend and hunting buddy of my uncle, my great uncle, and my grandfather. He also was a driver's education teacher for my aunt's at Cascade high. Many years later I went to work at Capital Manor for a short time and happened to meet this funny gruff man who loved to tell stories. He mentioned my grandfather's name one day, and I told him who I was. He hugged me tight and told me what a good man my grandfather was. After that day, he always made time to stop and say hi when he saw me. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. My sincere condolences to the family.

I well remember Mr. Bassien as an industrial arts teacher at Whiteaker Jr. High. Though saddled with a roomful of squirrelly boys, he routinely showed patience, good humor and perseverance in pushing us to understand the basics of drafting and create "clean" work. It was one of those classes that has paid dividends well down the road.
