Life Story of Koa James Robert Ku
Koa James Robert Ku was born on February 17, 2002, in Eugene, Oregon, to Patricia Ann (Mikolas) McGhee and James Gilbert Ku. Arriving 9.5 weeks early and weighing only 2 pounds 13 ounces, Koa began his life proving the meaning of his Hawaiian name, “courageous warrior.” From his first moments, he showed remarkable strength, spending one month in the NICU, where he captured the hearts of everyone who cared for him.
From the very beginning, Koa was deeply loved. At nine months old, he was diagnosed with non-verbal autism, a diagnosis that never dimmed his spirit nor limited the fullness of his life. Koa learned to communicate in his own expressive ways, signing words like “no” and “wait,” and sharing his joy through sound, movement, and his unforgettable laugh.
In 2007, he became a proud big brother when his brother Zachary was born. Though his parents later separated, they remained united in their unwavering love and devotion to Koa. His family grew again with the birth of his little sister Sophia, whom he adored.
Koa graduated from Cascade High School in 2020, a milestone reached during the challenges of the COVID pandemic. Through every phase of his life, he was known for the pure joy he brought into any room. His laugh often erupted when he heard the Kim Possible or Simpsons theme songs, watched YouTube videos, or enjoyed episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants. Though he spoke only a few words, he delighted in Campbell’s soup commercials with a heartfelt “mmm,” and he proudly said the name of his favorite food: “cheeseburger.”
Some of Koa’s happiest memories were made outdoors with his family. He loved camping throughout Oregon—often coloring at the campsite, going on walks, listening to music, and playing with his dog. Few things excited him more than hearing that it was time for a car ride to a new camping adventure. He enjoyed fishing trips, usually preferring to toss rocks into the water (sometimes scaring the fish away), and he cherished spending time with his puppy, Bean. These moments in nature perfectly reflected the peaceful, gentle spirit that defined him.
On December 1, 2025, Koa left this world far too soon after an epileptic seizure. Though his life ended early, the love he shared and the light he brought will remain forever.
A viewing will take place on Friday, December 12, 2025, beginning at 2:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 3:00 p.m. at Weddle Funeral Service in Stayton, Oregon.
Koa’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to DSP Connections, the Arc of Oregon, first responders, and all who supported Koa throughout his life. Your care, kindness, and dedication made a profound difference.
Koa will always be remembered as a courageous warrior, a gentle soul, and a source of immeasurable joy.
