John Hogenmuller Obituary

John Nelson Hogenmuller

Tallahassee - John Nelson Hogenmuller, 74, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. John was born on June 21, 1944, in Miami, Florida to parents Mary Kassabian Hogenmuller (originally from Worcester, Massachusetts) and Hans ("Jack") Hogenmuller (originally from Offenburg, Germany). He graduated from Archbishop Curley High School in Miami, Florida in 1962.

John attended Emory University and graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Law in 1966 and from Law School in 1968. John entered law school after his third year of college under a program which considered his first year of law school as his senior year of college. John was a member of the United States Army Reserve from 1968 through 1974 and received an Honorable Discharge on June 11, 1974.

On a fall Friday night at Florida State in 1969, John was set up on a blind date with Janice Marie Weir and they married the next year on August 3, 1970. They had two daughters, Anne Marie and Mary Elizabeth.

In his fifty years as a member of the Florida Bar, John served in many roles. He worked in private practice, for the Attorney General's Office, The Florida Bar, Associated Industries of Florida, the Office of the Public Defender of the Second Judicial Circuit, The Florida Parole Commission, and the Office of the State Courts Administrator.

For the past fifteen years, John served as the Executive Director of The Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association. The friends and colleagues he gained both in the office and across the state of Florida inspired a love of his profession that kept him working through his final days.

John was known for his integrity, sharp wit, and steel-trap mind. His capacity for football and baseball statistics was without equal. He ran three full marathons and was known as a speed demon on feet and wheels. He loved watching Formula 1 and endurance automobile racing. He eagerly anticipated the 24 Hours of Le Mans every June and was thrilled to see Porsche win the race in person the year of his 70th birthday. He loved traveling to Europe with Janice and particularly to Germany and Spain to visit with cousin Werner and his wife Gudrun.

John is survived by his wife of 48 years Janice Marie (Weir) Hogenmuller, daughters Mary Elizabeth Hogenmuller and Anne Marie (Hogenmuller) Ring, son-in-law Michael Patrick Ring, grandsons John Michael Ring and Luke Patrick Ring, granddogs Diesel, Coco, and Captain, and many other family members, coworkers, and friends who will miss him dearly.

The family expresses their gratitude to Father Michael Foley of Good Shepherd Catholic Church; Drs. Charles Williams, Paresh Patel, and Sergio Ginaldi for their steadfast guidance; the overwhelmingly kind and professional staff of The Margaret Z. Dozier House of Big Bend Hospice; as well as countless friends and coworkers for their expressions of love, humor, and support.

The family will hold a private service at John's favorite spot on Cartoogechaye Creek in Franklin, North Carolina, just in time for the most beautiful time of year in the Smoky Mountains. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's name to the Hurricane Michael rebuilding efforts of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Panama City, Florida https://www.saintjohnpc.org/. Sentiments and memories of John will be cherished by the family and may be sent to [email protected].

Not sure what to say?

Dear Mrs. Hogenmuller:

Quite by accident, I just stumbled across John's obituary on the internet. I graduated from college at Emory in 1968 when John graduated from the Emory Law School. We met when we joined the same Army Reserve unit in Atlanta. John was in my Basic Training company at Ft. Polk and in the same company for AIT at Ft. Sam Houston. He and I gave each other the final "practice injections" that we received at Ft. Sam Houston.
I also remember being with him during some really "interesting" days at Ft. Polk. John had a dry sense of humor that made each day a little better.

As happens all too often with military friendships, John and I never had any contact after we finished our training. He was a fine man, though, and his dry wit and personal kindness served many of us well in circumstances that were not particularly appealing. John would remember (and get a good laugh) from the phrase we often chanted at Ft. Polk: Eagle Eye Alpha, Best Damn Tigers in the Second Brigade. (Those words stood for Company A, Second Battalion, Second Training Brigade.) John was not that much of a tiger and I most definitely was not, but he surely made life better for me and for a lot of other young men who are not so young anymore. I am so glad that John found happiness in his family, as I have, too.

So sorry. John was one my favorite NAPC counterparts. Havent seen John in a couple of years but we have talked. John was always good for a dry laugh. I miss him greatly and NAPC is certainly better for him being a longtime member.Rest in Peace dear friend, love you.❤

I am so very sorry to hear of John's death. I came to know John through NAPC a number of years ago. What a great public servant to the prosecutors of Florida and the citizens of Florida, in general. Just an all-around wonderful person. I will miss him and his wisdom. Please accept my condolences.

Dear Janice,

I am saddened to read of John's death. What I know for sure is my Mother, Hazel Collins, who considered John one of her Sons while working with him at the Attorney General's office many years ago, greeted him with open arms as he entered into Heaven. She truly loved him dearly.

Jim, Jamie, Justin, and I send you our love, and our very deepest sympathy.

My condolences to all of John's family and friends.

I worked with John for many years at the Office of the State Courts Administrator, where he accomplished a great deal supporting court committees engaged on criminal law matters. As I recall, he also monitored an enormous number of legislative proposals each year on behalf of the courts.

John was a gentleman, an able lawyer, and a good colleague. He will be missed.

We have lots of fond memories to look back on through the years. One I remember about John was the day he came to my office (we worked in the same building) he had a photo he wanted me to see of his first grandson and I told him I thought he looked like him and he said do you really think so? He got this big smile and was so proud!!!
Please know we sent our love and here if theres anything we can help with ❤❤❤

John was an old soul friend that I saw only a couple of time each year at the national meetings for Prosecutor Coordinators. Even so, his wit and insight made one feel as though we were neighbors. He will be missed dearly by his friends and colleagues.
