Sidney Mendelson Obituary

Sidney William Mendelson Sidney William Mendelson, 89, died Friday, June 16, 2006. The graveside service will be at 10 a.m. EDT Monday at Oakland Cemetery. Family will receive friends following the service at the residence of Robert and Cyndi Mendelson, 2749 Millstone Plantation Road, Tallahassee. Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Riggins Road Chapel (850-877-8191) is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308, or a favorite charity. Mr. Mendelson was born April 24, 1917, in Tallahassee, the son of the late Samuel and Jennie Mendelson. He attended Leon High School and graduated from Georgia Military Academy. Upon graduation from the University of Florida, he joined his father in the family business, Mendelson's Department Store. He married Rosalind Mendelson of Live Oak on June 30, 1940, and they were married for more than 60 years until her death in May 2001. He served as a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy during World War II and then returned to Tallahassee to rejoin his father and brother, Harold, in the business, which was a Tallahassee institution for more than 60 years. After selling Mendelson's in 1973, he became a real-estate broker until he retired in 1997. In addition to the department store, Mr. Mendelson was very active in civic affairs. He was past president and honorary president of Temple Israel; a Paul Harris Fellow, past president and an Honorary Member of the Tallahassee Rotary Club; a charter member of the Northside Rotary Club; the founder and member of the Board of Directors of Leon Federal Savings and Loan; chairman of the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce's Merchants' Division; past president of Capital City Country Club; a member of Tau Epsilon Phi; member of Florida Blue Key; and was involved in numerous other civic activities. He also was a Mason. Survivors include three sons, Alan Mendelson (and wife Lesley) and Robert Mendelson (and wife Cyndi), both of Tallahassee, and Mark Mendelson of Atlanta; two daughters, Sarah Mendelson Boone (and husband Robert) of Raleigh, N.C., and Marianne Mendelson Shulman (and husband Larry) of West Caldwell, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Aaron, Jacob, Tyler, Alex and Matthew Mendelson, Robbie Boone, Sydney Boone Gaylord, and Neil and Stephen Shulman; two great-granddaughters, Vail and Haven Gaylord; a sister-in-law, Lillian Mendelson; numerous nieces and nephews; his housekeeper of more than 40 years, Hattie Craig; and his caregiver, Gladys Cook.
