Johnnie Lamkin Obituary
Johnnie Gruber Lamkin passed away at Allegro Assisted Living Facility early Friday morning, February 21, 2014, surrounded by family and friends. She was 82 years old.
Johnnie is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob) E. Lamkin of Tallahassee, FL; two daughters: Laura Kelley and husband Terry Kelley of Cairo, GA, and Gayle Lamkin of Tallahassee, FL; three grandchildren: Megan, Jordan, and Chase. She was preceded in death by her parents John G. Gruber and Della Mae Dykes Gruber of Alma, GA and daughter Lisa Thrower of Jacksonville, FL.
After raising her family, Johnnie earned a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education and taught kindergarten for 27 years in Glynn County, GA and in Thomas County, GA. She dearly loved teaching and received her reward by knowing she had touched the eager minds of so many little children. She continued to share a sweet gentle smile as a member of Thomasville Road Baptist Church. Here she taught Sunday School and sang with the Senior Adult Choir. She gave of herself where ever she saw a need. She was so easy to love.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Culley's MeadowWood Timberlane Road Chapel on Tuesday, February 25th from 10:00am to 11:00am, followed by a celebration of her life 11:00am. A reception in Johnnie's honor will be held in the MeadowWood Room following the entombment.
The family wishes to thank the care staff and residents at Allegro, the kind people from Big Bend Hospice and countless friends who made the heavenly transition so beautiful.
The family also wishes that in lieu of flowers, donations and memorial contributions be made to National Parkinson Foundation, North Florida, P.O. Box 14722, Tallahassee, FL 32317.

I will always remember Johnnie dressing up as Raggedy Ann for Halloween one year and how cute she looked. She was so easy to love and adored all of the children. She talked to me so much about her love for Bob and her children and grandchildren, and loved each one dearly. She was a dear friend who was like another mother to me. I know she is enjoying Heaven. Her smile and compassionate really impacted my life in a special way. All my love, hugs and prayers to her beautiful family.

To Bob, Laura and Terry, Gayle, Megan, Jordan and Chase, I was sorry to hear of the loss of Johnnie Mae. She was always very kind and pleasant. As Megan's Dad, I was always impressed by her nurturing manner with kids. She really understood children, especially during their most important formative years. I can easily and fondly recall her calling Megan's name in her sweet tone... M-e-e-e-gan. Johnnie was very sweet and I am honored to be a part of the family. I want you all to know that I am here for you if you need anything. I am sure that we are all comforted by our pleasant memories of Johnnie as a Mother, a Wife, a Grandmother (Nana) and as a Teacher. I am one of the little children who had the privilege of calling my Kindergarten teacher, "Mrs. Lamkin" in the classroom, but at home in the Belle Pointe neighborhood, she was my "Aunt Johnnie". What an amazing kind, loving and generous woman and family! Growing up with Aunt Johnnie, Uncle Bob, Mom Mae, Lisa, Laura, Gayle and Boozie are memories that can never be taken away. I am sorry for your loss! I love you guys with all that I am!
