From 1956-1965, she taught English at Providence Central High School. In 1970, she received her Ph.D. in English from St. Louis University.

Barbara Cicardo was hired at UL as an Assistant Professor of English in 1970, tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 1975, and promoted to full professor in 1982. She was Director of the Freshman English Program from 1975-79. From 1976-85, she was Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities. From 1982-2001, she was also the Director of Academic Planning and Faculty Development. She was Coordinator of the Canadian Studies Program from 1983-89.

Director of more than a dozen Ph.D. dissertations at UL, Dr. Cicardo continued to teach until her death. She was responsible for the acquisition of over half a million dollars in grants for UL. She was awarded the UL Distinguished Professor Award in 1979 and was given the LEH Special Humanities Award for Outstanding Contributions to Humanities in the State of Louisiana in 1987. She was the recipient of the UL Award of Merit for Service. She was awarded the Best Teacher Award, UL National Panhellenic Council in 2004. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma.

Father Walter J. Ong, internationally-renowned English scholar and Barbara's teacher at St. Louis University, had this to say about her when she was his student: "Miss Barbara Cicardo is a highly-intelligent, industrious student, with a sure sense of direction and determination, completely committed to teaching and scholarship…. As a teaching assistant here, Bobbie Cicardo was one of the best we have ever had. She is an outgoing person, good-humored, high-spirited, very kind, easy to get along with and cooperative, though not the kind of person who can be pushed around, very understanding, with wonderful integrity of character and wide intellectual and artistic interests. She finds tremendous satisfaction in teaching and will doubtless devote her entire life to it."

Survivors include one sister, Constance LaRochelle; one niece, Barbara LaRochelle Cutrera, and her husband, Budge Cutrera III; and one great-nephew, Joseph Cutrera. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Cicardo and Sara Glorioso Cicardo.

I was fortunate to have Bobbie as a roommate during her second year at St. Louis University. She brought life, energy, and laughter to our group. After I completed my degree and returned to the Northwest, I remained in contact with Bobbie for the ensuing 45 years. I was able to visit Louisiana on several occasions, Bobbie made two trips to Oregon, and we kept in touch via telephone calls. A conversation with Bobbie was always lengthy and comprehensive and included discussions about family, mutual friends, movies, and books. Even if weeks had passed between our contacts it would seem as if no time had elapsed. Bobbie had many talents and she excelled at friendship. Rest in peace, my friend.

In three years of high school English at Providence Central High School, Barbara Cicardo taught me ideas and skills that I still use every day. She changed the course of my life, including my decision to major in English. She is still my ideal as a teacher and a mentor. God bless her, as she has blessed me and so many others.

When I think back to Providence Academy, which is often, my favorite teacher was always "Ms. Cicardo". Even when she was so very young, it was obvious that she had found her calling and inspired so many of us with her dedication. My thoughts are with her family.

What an outstanding person and excellent teacher she was. I had her for high school English and she opened my horizons in many ways. I remember all of us scurrying around finding poems with the shortest possible lines, since we had to memorize and recite for her 150 lines of poetry each semester.

I know Dr. Cicardo will be sorely missed by many. I offer my sympathy and prayers for her family

Dr. Cicardo will be be missed. I remember her as unfailingly kind, pleasant and gentle; best of all she was funny, without being disgusting. May perpetual light shine upon her.

A few years ago I got back in touch with Ms Cicardo and what a conversation. I never forgot some of the things she taught us about reading books or literature. She definitley imparted a love of reading and writing to her students. She definitely shared her talents with all. She will be missed. Our family shares in her families sorrow.--Rosa Brotherton

I did not learn until a few months ago when I was wandering the romance section of Barnes & Noble that Bobbie was a big fan of the genre (and in fact had written a paper on it). She took me up and down the aisles, showing me her favorites. We had a great time talking about Georgette Heyer, a writer we both liked. I could see why she continued to be a favorite teacher to her students: she was not a snob about literature, and appreciated the scientific to science-fiction, from the 19th century Romantic novel to the romance novel. She no doubt conveyed this to her students as much as she did to me that night. I will remember that evening in the bookstore with a smile.

I don't know that I've ever met someone kinder and more sincere than Dr. Cicardo. She went above and beyond for students like me, and in my loss I can't imagine the loss her family must feel.
