Molly Adams Obituary

Adams, Molly

Margaret Alice Bradshaw Adams, known to her family and friends (and just about everyone else) as Molly, was born in 1936 in Colorado Springs, CO. She was the oldest child of Aaron Bradshaw, employed by the US Forestry Service, and Barbara Finn Bradshaw, a registered nurse. She attended Colorado College on scholarship, and despite a bout with polio in her freshman year graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She continued her studies in English language and literature at Columbia University, where she earned a Master's degree, and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At UNC she met fellow graduate student Barry Adams, and they were married in 1962. When Barry completed his Ph.D., they moved to Ithaca so that he could begin his career in the Cornell English Department. Molly continued research on her Ph.D. dissertation but soon found that her attention and talents were in great demand at home and in her community. Molly and Barry had two daughters, and Molly helped to start a cooperative preschool in Brooktondale. Later she took on various responsibilities as PTA volunteer, helped run a bulk food buying club, edited the community newsletter, worked on the annual Brooktondale quilt, and served on the Caroline town board. As the children got older, she took on more volunteer activities, including many associated with the Democratic party. She served on the board of Historic Ithaca in the 1970's and worked to help restore the Clinton House and the State Theatre. She later joined the efforts to protect the Old Mill at Upper Treman State Park. Old buildings and local history became abiding passions. In 2002, she was forced to reduce her activities for a time following treatment for breast cancer. But in her characteristic fashion, she followed doctors' orders, did what needed to be done, and got back to work. She will be remembered as a champion for the poor, sick and elderly, and as someone who thought every day about what she could do to improve the lives of those around her. Molly is survived by her husband of 51 years, Barry B. Adams; their daughter, Emily Adams and son-in-law Paulus Dominicus of Belgium; their daughter, Katie Adams of Seattle; grandchildren Alan and Mara Pugh; grandchildren Eleanor, Theodor, and Alice Miller; her sister, Phyllis Rounds; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her younger brother Bob Bradshaw. There will be a memorial event at the Upper Robert H. Treman State park, at the pavilion just beyond the Old Mill, on Tuesday, July 22, at 3 PM. There will be a second commemorative event at the Brooktondale Community Center the following Sunday, July 27, at 2 PM. Donations in Molly's memory may be made to Historic Ithaca or the charity of one's choice.

To Molly's family - - As a friend and sorority sister of Molly's at Colorado College, I have kept in touch through her informative Christmas letters throughout the years. She was an amazing woman admired by all of us with her quick wit and super intelligence. I know her family and the community will deeply miss her.
I send my condolences to her husband Barry and to the rest of the family.

Dear Barry and Family, I was so sad to hear of Molly's death. I live in Seattle now, but grew up in Brooktondale. Molly was my go-to person for questions of genealogy and history when I was writing a paper on my family. When I visited home, Molly was always cheerfully willing to meet with me and went way beyond the basics to dig out information that helped me greatly in my research. I send my condolences to the family.

Sending heartfelt condolences to your family, as Molly's generous light continues to burn brightly in all of our hearts. I had the good fortune to work with Molly on youth and recycling concerns and found her dedication to our community an inspiration indeed...

It is with deep sadness, that I send this note of sympathy to Molly's family. Molly was always so very cheerful, and such a wonderful friend to the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra...and to me. I will miss her smile, and seeing her at our concerts. My thoughts and prayers are with Barry and with her family. -Sheila Ossit (CCO Exec. Dir.)

Dear Barry and family of Molly,
Peter and I were greatly saddened to hear of Molly's death. We appreciated her loyal and enthusiastic support of NYS Baroque, and always enjoyed talking to her after our concerts.
May the angles lead her to paradise.
With sustaining thoughts and love,
Peter and Libby Hedrick

As a member of the Board of Trustees of the Friends of Robert H. Treman State, I know we are all deeply saddened by Molly's death and our hearts go out to Barry and their family. We will sorely miss Molly. She was a cornerstone of our group contributing many years of dedicated work, knowledge, and wisdom, serving several years as our president and several more as our secretary. We won't be the same without Molly.

Prays and condolences to Barry and girls. Molly was one of the true friends that you could go without seeing for long periods of time and pick up right where you left off. She was always thinking of and doing for others - so many benefited from her assistance. Brooktondale has lost one of their greatest assets. I am only one of many who will miss Molly.
