Nina Lambert Obituary

Nina W. Lambert, of Ithaca, died at her home, peacefully in her sleep, on Friday, December 10, 2010. She was born in Brooklyn on October 20, 1932, the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Helen S. Weingarten. Nina attended PS6, Birch Wathen, and Vassar College (Class of 1954) where she majored in Art History. She later received her Masters at Cornell University in 1955 in Child Development and Family Relations. It was at Cornell that she met her beloved husband, Robert John Lambert Jr. whom she married in 1956. She taught Child Development at Vassar College (1955-56) and returned to Cornell for her PhD (1959) in Child Psychology. After her postdoctoral work (Langley Porter, UCSF) she was a research associate at Cornell until, in 1963, she went into private practice as a psychologist, a profession she continued throughout her life. She also was an avid rock gardener, creating with her husband a beautiful and much-toured rock garden at their home in Ithaca. She is survived by her husband, Robert John Lambert Jr. of Ithaca; her daughter, Sarah L. Lambert and son-in-law Michael J. Ward of Port Jervis, NY; and her sister, Linda W. (Philip) Scheffler of New York, NY. Services will be private and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospicare of Tompkins County.

Nina was a great help to me after the death of my mother. She was a wonderful woman who loved her garden and her family. My deepest sympathies.

Nina was generous in sharing her knowledge of rock gardening. She was an early member of the North American Rock Garden Society. Her garden was inspiring and I have many plants in my garden to remind me of her. She will be missed. ~David Mitchell, Ithaca, New York

Nina was very kind and helpful to me as a new rock gardener. I have several "Nina plants" happily growing in my yard, helping me to remember her.

Dr. Lambert was instrumental in my life when I was very young. I am forever thankful for what she did for me. I know that she changed the lives of many. She was a wonderful person.
