Thomas Bancroft Obituary

Thomas Ochiltree Bancroft, Jr.

Thomas Ochiltree Bancroft, Jr., better known to many people as Toby, was born May 15, 1931, and passed peacefully at his home on May 9, 2015, with his family and beloved helpers by his side. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Thomas Ochiltree and Vada Lee Speed Bancroft.

He is survived by his first and only love of 67 years, Joan Snelling Bancroft, and their three daughters: Bonnie and her husband, Wayne H. Woods; Rebecca and her husband, Andrew L. Mintz; and Lee Ochiltree Bancroft.

He is survived by his grandchildren, Thomas Bancroft Mattei, Robert Turner Mattei, Joanie Mintz, William Garrison Mintz, Blair Elizabeth Mintz, Toby Sours Toca, and Calle Lee Sours. He is also survived by his two great grandchildren Thomas Bancroft Mattei, Jr. and Rory Leigh Mintz. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Arabella Bancroft Cann and his brother, Frederick Speed Bancroft.

Toby was well known and respected throughout the paper and multiwall industry. He was a tough and fierce competitor both in the market place and on the golf course. He devoted his life to his businesses and was a very creative entrepreneur. He was directly responsible for numerous and successful companies within the packaging industry that serviced customers throughout North America. His charismatic personality attracted many talented people to lead his companies. But, it was his generous heart that touched many lives and will be most remembered. He was a life-long member of Grace Episcopal Church. He served on the Vestry and gave his time to other areas involving the Church. Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors of St. Francis Medical Center and on the First Fidelity Board.

Toby was a graduate of Northeast Louisiana University and graduated with a BA in Business. During his years at Northeast, he worked at Bancroft Bag learning the business from the ground up and played with distinction on the NLU Golf Team. He was an avid hunter and Marksman. He participated in many Trap and Skeet shoots with his father and won many awards and trophies throughout his younger years. Along with his father, he gave his support and his time to the Monroe Police Department. His passions in life were playing golf, reading, and tending to the wildlife at Riverview.

Pallbearers will be: A. Harris Brown, Robert Turner Mattei, Thomas Bancroft Mattei, William Garrison Mintz, J. Frederick Moeller, Thomas Q. Nash, John Dudley Pipes, and Bennie Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be: Billy Battaglia, Robert Harris, Tom King, Walter Moore, Billy Temple, Tom Torrogriossa, and Wayne H. Woods.

I had the honor of knowing and working for Toby the better part of 33 years. I also had the opportunity to visit with Toby many times at his office, as well as at the plant, and was always motivated by our conversations. He will be truly missed in the industry, the plant and by myself.
