Virginia Higbee Obituary

Virginia Bruhn Higbee

Cedar City - On March 1, 2018, our beloved grandma, mother, and sweetheart, Virginia Bruhn Higbee, returned suddenly and painlessly to the loving arms of her Heavenly Father after an acute cardiovascular event. Ginny was born January 29, 1947 to Mark V Bruhn and Rama Yardley Bruhn in Panguitch, Utah. After graduating from Panguitch High School, she attended Southern Utah State College, receiving her degree in English Literature and Psychology. She worked as a Rangerette at the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center during the summers of 1965-67, and met her eternal partner, Bob Higbee, during this time. They became engaged in November 1969, and were married on February 28, 1970, in the St. George, Utah LDS Temple. She developed the Headstart Program at SUU, and served as its Executive Director for many years. Ginny was a natural leader and teacher. She had the remarkable ability to bring out the best in those she worked with, and held many leadership and church callings. After retiring from SUU, she and Bob traveled extensively. One of her greatest joys was serving in the LDS temple, first in St. George and then in Cedar City. She adored her grandchildren and spent as much time with them as possible, supporting their talents and activities. Throughout her life she advocated for those who could not advocate for themselves and created opportunities to serve and lift up those around her. She had a remarkable sense of humor, and reminded those she loved to find joy in simple things. She was beloved by many, and created a legacy of service and love that will carry on for generations to come.

She was preceded in death by her Father, Mark V Bruhn, and her mother, Rama Lareeta Yardley Bruhn.

She is survived by her husband, Robert K. Higbee, her children, Thomas Sean Higbee and his wife Kathy Higbee, Holly Jan Higbee Hafen and her husband Jason Hafen, Aimee Anne Higbee Uchman and her husband Christopher Uchman, and grandchildren, Marissa, Jaden, Tessa, and Keira Higbee; Hunter, Kaylee, Jace, Lexi, and Brynlee Hafen; and Sophia Uchman.

Viewings will be held at Southern Utah Mortuary (190 N 300 W,) on Monday, March 5, 2018, from 6-8pm, and at the Cedar City 9th Ward (256 South 900 West, Cedar City, UT) Tuesday, March 6th from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Services will be held at the Cedar City 9th Ward Chapel, March 6th at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at the Cedar City Cemetery, under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. Dear Family of Virginia,
I just wanted to say that Ginny is not forgotten and as we plan our Panguitch Class reunion of 1965 she is in our thoughts and she will have her picture displayed on a special tablet for our friends who have passed on. We had so many good times and adventures growing up and one I do remember is making lunches and riding our bikes to the flume at the top south of hwy 89 with some of our other friends and laughing, eating our lunch and swimming in our underwear in the dirty old flume, which really was a ditch. those were the days of being carefree and full of youth and it was a good day to remember with Ginny..Thinking of her and all of her family today. Love, Sherrie White Harbertson

Dear Bob and family,
I am greatly saddened by the sudden passing of Ginny. What a pleasure I had working with her at U S F and watching you do your beautiful wood carving.
May you be comforted in knowing that this is only a temporary separation. Families are forever and you will all be together again.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Mary Lou Mackelprang

In my capacity as District Director for Rehabilitation Services in So. Utah I had the great privilege of working closely with Virginia on establishing and coordinating programs and services for disabled and underserved adults and youth in our eleven county area. There was no one better than Virginia when it came to understanding the needs of people who just needed a little help to get there lives going in the right direction.

Virginia always kept her focus on the welfare of the people she served . I first met Virginia when she organized and led the Cedar City Special Olympics program in Cedar City and I was doing the same in St. George, this was in the 1970's. We have shared a working relationship and friendship since those early years.

I will miss you Virginia but will always have great memories of our time together.

Dear Family,
Virginia and I were friends at a very early age. We lived close to each other and I have fond memories of times spent in her home. Her mom, Rama, always made candied popcorn for us to eat while we played. Virginia helped me memorize The Lord's Prayer as we walked to and from school. She was very smart and a good friend. We are fortunate to have wonderful memories when someone dear to us passes away. We will all miss her but find great comfort knowing we will see her again. Olivia Orton Worthen

I have know Ginny from high school when she was a Bobcat and I was a Mustang. I had the opportunity of opening a Head Start program under her direction then it was my privilege to work with her in the St. George Temple. She has blessed my life, as she did everyone she met. Again she teaches us to treasure each day. She will be greatly missed, but always remembered.

Dear Family of Ginny,
Our deepest sympathy to Bob and the family. We are all shocked and our class of 65 at PHS has been emailing and facebooking everyone. As with small schools we were all very involved during our growing years and some have stayed close through class reunions and visits. I loved reading more about her working years and how she succeeded in all she did. She will be greatly missed by many. Please know how much we care and loved her too. Sherrie White Harbertson
