Bill Baehr, 62, of Chapin, passed away surrounded by his loving family, Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Lexington Medical Center. Born May 18, 1946 in Indianapolis, IN, he was a son of the late William Howard and Nannie Mildred Sox Baehr. Bill enjoyed his career as a nuclear engineer for SCE&G at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station.
Bill commanded a lot of respect for his intellect and the way he treated his staff. He was instrumental in establishing the environmental program at V.C. Summer Nuclear Station and played a significant role in the station’s licensing. After his retirement from SCE&G, he returned to his work in the nuclear field to initiate the decommissioning of the CVTR tube reactor in Parr, SC. He earned his baccalaureate degree in Physics from Lenoir-Rhyne College and his master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Georgia Tech.
Mr. Baehr is survived by his wife, Haidee C. Baehr; his sons, H. Stony Baehr of Chapin, SC and William Collin Baehr of Florence, SC and his brother, Norman Baehr of Surrey, England. He was a humble man with a big heart who took care of all those around him. He was a man of many friends, and he considered his friends as his family. He was very dear to many and will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials are made to the Vascular Disease Foundation, 1075 South Yukon St., Suite 320, Lakewood, CO, 80226. A memorial fund in his memory has been established at their website, www.vdf.org/donate/memorialfunds.php.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill's family. Bill was a mentor for much of my professional career and for that I am grateful. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by many.

Sorry we were not able to be with you today at Bill's memorial service. I will always remember how he continually tried to raise the technical knowledge and ability of the radiation protection and environmental personnel he managed (sometimes despite opposition from upper management).
I also remember his inherent fairness towards his people and his understanding nature.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this trying time.
