Janice Rupp Obituary

Janice E. Godlewski Rupp, 56, of Dunmore, died on Aug. 12 after a brave and courageous six- year battle with ovarian cancer. She was the wife of James P. Rupp. The couple would have celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary on Aug. 14.

Born in West Scranton, daughter of the late Roman and Angela Rosato Godlew-ski, she graduated from West Scranton Central Catholic High School. She was an active member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish, where she was a member of the choir. Janice worked at the University of Scranton for 23 years, with her longest tenure as an office manager for Student Health Services, where she greeted thousands of students with kindness and compassion. Her strong work ethic and love for working at the University was shown every day, as she did not let her illness stop her from working. One of Janice's proudest moments was to present each of her three daughters their college diplomas during their University of Scranton Commencement ceremonies.

Janice was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and loyal friend to so many. She was a strong person who valued what was important in life, such as love for her family and friends and devotion to her faith. She was selfless, always thinking and taking care of others before herself. Her constant love and kindness brought so many people together to share in her joy. Her positive attitude and sense of humor despite her illness could brighten up the room. Janice cherished so many happy memories with all of her family and dear friends. She will be deeply missed by all of those she touched.

The family would like to thank Dr. J. Bruce Ruppenthal, the 4th-floor nursing and ICU staffs at Moses Taylor Hospital, Dr. Sholi, the entire staff at Hematology and Oncology Associates and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their never- ending care, support and kindness.

Janice is also survived by three daughters, Melissa Balzano and husband, Anthony, Montvale, N.J.; Maria Phillips and husband, Chris, Olyphant; and Jennifer Rupp, Dunmore; sisters, Carol McGlone and Suzanne Stec; and a brother, James Godlewski; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. Interment to follow in Dunmore Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Janice's name may be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 340 Montage Mountain Road, Moosic, PA 18507 or Hospice Community Care, 100 Williams Street, Dunmore, PA 18512.

I just heard of this upsetting loss. As I no longer live in Dunmore, I am often "out of the loop". I apologize for this belated message but I just learned of Mrs. Rupp's death through Chris Loyek yesterday.
Having been a teacher at Dunmore High School, I can only say that Mrs. Rupp was a fine example of what a parent should be. Her three daughters are three of the kindest, friendliest, and lovliest young women I have ever had the pleasure to see matriculating through the halls of our school. Mrs. Rupp never failed to thank us for our work with her children and I shall never have the words to thank her for raising such wonderful girls.
My sincerest condolences go out to the entire family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Rupp and family. Janice was such a kind person and I enjoyed taking care of her. Although I didn't know her long, it was honor to know her. One thing that showed about Janice was the love for her family.

Jim & family,

I am very sorry for your loss; I, too, remember Janice from our days at West Scranton Central Catholic. Janice always had a smile on her face and brought sunshine into any room she entered. Jim, I remember when the two of you first started dating and the beautiful charm bracelet you gave her. She always enjoyed showing it to others. May your memories give you comfort and your friends and family give you strength at this difficult time.
