Tom "Doc" Dougherty of Dunmore, died Saturday at Allied Hospice surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ellen Butler Dougherty who died July 24, 2014. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Thomas J. And Margaret "Peg" Barrett Dougherty and was a proud graduate of Dunmore High School and the University of Scranton. Prior to retirement, he was an educator/coach in the Dunmore School District.

Surviving are three sons, Michael and wife Paula of Dunmore, Gerard Dougherty and his companion Alisha Micknick, of Taylor, Thomas and wife Joyce, of Dunmore, daughter Ellen and spouse Matt of Waverly Twp, eleven grandchildren, Katie Tully Hart and her husband Patrick, Gerard and Patrick Dougherty, Alexandra Macrina and husband Kyle, Kyle and wife Brianna Lawless, Michael and fiancé Julia Lowe, Tommy and Rogan Dougherty, Kevin, Jack and Kelly Quinn and fiancé Jaret Horn, and 4 great grandchildren, two sisters Margaret Dougherty, Scranton, and Patricia Dougherty of St. Augustine Florida.

Doc was a proud teacher and coach and loved to see kids succeed in the classroom and in athletics, especially his grandkids. He was always searching the paper to cut out and laminate their latest achievements. Doc was a former boys basketball coach at Dunmore High School where he enjoyed much success and mentored many young men and formed life long relationships with his former players.

Doc was the leader of "cheesy egg day", a Sunday morning ritual where he got to see and connect with his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren in turn, looked forward to these simple gathering to spend time with their grandfather, connect with him and each other.

Doc enjoyed the game of golf and passed this love to his family. He was a 50 plus year member of Elmhurst Country Club, where he enjoyed countless rounds with his buddies. He especially loved his Friday crew and time spent on the patio enjoying a skull buster or two.

The funeral will be Friday with a mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at Immaculate Conception Church, 800 Taylor Ave, Scranton, Pa. Interment Dunmore Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday morning from 9am until mass time.
