James (Jim) E. Dunn

James E. Dunn (Jim Dunn) of 613 Springwood Avenue, Gibsonville NC died on May 25, 2014. He was a lifetime resident of Guilford County and was the son of William T. Dunn and Estelle W. Dunn who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara Howerton Dunn and a sister Betty Phelps Dunn of Augusta Georgia.
He is survived by one son, Jason Elliott Dunn of Cary, four sisters: Mary S. Miller of Oak Island, Patricia Forbragd of Beaverton Oregon, Elizabeth Walker of Burlington, and Jewel Davis of Burlington. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Frances Howerton, two brothers-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends across the United States.
Jim put a high value on education. He was a graduate of Gibsonville High School, Elon College (University of Elon), A & T State University, Appalachian State University, and the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Jim was proud of his military service as a cold war veteran. He served two years of active duty and six years of reserve duty in the U.S. Army during the 1960's.
Although other lucrative opportunities were available, Jim chose a career in public education with the Guilford County School System as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal for over 30 years. He served as an assistant principal or principal in nine schools in the old and new Guilford County School Systems.
He was an adult member of Friedens Lutheran Church and in his early years, served on numerous church committees and was chairman of the church council. In his latter years, he continued his church service as an usher, lay reader, and member of the early service church choir.
Jim's political involvements included numerous professional educational organizations. He was a member of the Gibsonville Long Range Planning Committee and served on the Town Board of Aldermen.
The family would like to recognize the special care given to him by his neighbors. Much happiness, love, and sharing took place over the years with these friends and others too numerous to mention.
The family would also like to give special thanks to Barbara Albright, Elizabeth Walker, Richard and Lyndia Kleeberg, and to David and Edwina Haddad for the support they provided to Jim during his convalescence.
Jim always believed that duty and service were more important than recognition and accolades in all endeavors. He tried to instill the same values in his students.
In lieu of food or flowers, donations may be made to Friedens Lutheran Church at 6001 NC Highway 61 North, Gibsonville NC, The American Heart Association, or to a charity of one's choice.
A private graveside service for immediate family will be held at Friedens Lutheran Church.
