My thoughts and prayers are with your family through this difficult time. I was in Caleb's class and when Joe would pass by he would always have a smile on his face and stop and say Hi.
I know that no matter where you are, he will always be watching over you. I wish you strength and peace of mind.

Ruth, Caleb, and Noah:
I was so saddened to hear of Joe's passing. I remember him fondly as my first real soccer coach when I played for the grey team almost 40 years ago. I have many happy memories of Joe. He was always so patient and kind with us kids. What a wonderful legacy he left to our community through his hard work to establish LUYSA and the high school soccer team.
Several years ago when I was coaching the high school soccer team, I established the "Joe Schappa Soccer Spirit Award" that was given to the player that most exemplified the spirit of soccer: hard work, determination, positive attitude, and being a good teammate. I couldn't think of a better example of those attributes than Joe. I was so pleased and honored that Joe came to our awards banquet the first year we gave out that award, as it gave me an opportunity to tell the kids (and parents) how important Joe had been to me and to soccer in Baltimore. Hopefully Joe saw how much he's been appreciated by the Baltimore soccer community.
Joe was a wonderful man who will be missed by so many people, but his legacy will live on well beyond our time on this earth because of the many, many good things he did for those around him.

Ruth, Caleb and Noah, My heartfelt sympathy for your loss of a Husband, Father and Granddad. It has been many years since seeing all of you and this picture of Joe is like seeing him during the years when Curt and Caleb(ornery buddies) from kindergarten to Seniors at Liberty Union. A beautiful picture! I remember Joe and his hard work to ensure L.U. had a Soccer Club. Many memories! Please know my hugs and love will be carried to you by Curt. Be well family and cherish the memories within your heart and soul. Love, Linda (Gambill)Ewald (Curt's mommie) :)

My late husband, Warren and I thought Joe to be one of the smartest people ever. He also was concerned about sharing his love for education with others. I admire his values, along with those of Ruth's. What an amazing couple! I know Joe's memory "will be for a blessing." I am sorry I live in Seattle and can't be there for the celebration of his life this week. Love to Ruth. From Linda Wolf
