Albert Dutton Obituary

ALBERT E. DUTTON Eureka's native son, Albert E. Dutton, 83, passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side at 7PM on Monday August 31st after his long and courageous battle with cancer. Al was born March 20, 1932 to Albert "Brotha" & Caryl Dutton. Growing up Al made many friends, a trait that continued throughout his life. It started on the day of his birth in the hospital where he and Don Tonnini were nursery mates. His early childhood friends who continued to be lifelong friends called themselves "The Brett Street Gang". They included Bill Hilfiker, Jimmy Horel, Berty Lewis, & Tom Slack. Al attended Eureka High School where he played sports and proudly graduated with the class of 1950. He then began studying & playing football at Humboldt State. He was drafted into the army and served in Korea as a Corporal in The Signal Corps from 1951 to 1953. He saw active combat. Upon returning to Eureka Al began his working career. Following in the steps of his deputy sheriff father, Al joined the Eureka Police Department in 1958 where he served for 30 years. To this day it was not unusual for Al to be stopped on the street & thanked for the positive influence he had on individuals and our community. He was proud that his brother, Fred, followed in his law enforcement footsteps and joined the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department. In the 60's, Al played for the local semi-pro football team The Forester's. His sports career also included several years playing with the senior softball team "The Legends". When Al wasn't playing sports he enjoyed watching EHS, HSU, The Forty Niners and the S.F. Giants, & his grandchildren's various sports. As much as Al loved sports, it paled in comparison to the love he held closely in his heart for his family. In 1972 Al met the love of his life, Patti. They were married July 28, 1973 and enjoyed 42 years together. In 1980 they were blessed with their daughter Katy and Al met the second love of his life. Al's family continued to grow in 2006 when Katy married Russell Boham and together they have two amazing children Alyssa and Maddox who were the apple of their "Papa's" eyes. Al also loved spending time & making memories with his other daughter Kristi, granddaughters Sarah and Ashley, and great-grandsons Sevi & Manny. Al was also very proud of his nephews Rick, Scott (Rebecca), & Steve (Klytia) & their children Justin, Hannah, Natalie, Sophia, and Savana & Cade. For those who knew Al, knew his love for animals as well. He could always be found with his faithful companion "Shadow" by his side. Al was a proud member of the Korean War Veterans Association & Humboldt Bay Kiwanis both of which he served as President. Al is survived by his loving wife Patti, his daughters Katy Boham (Russell) & Kristi Matthews, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, his mother-in-law Velma Poole, brother-in-law Jim Arvold & sister-in-law, Kay Arvold & extended family & friends who are like family. He was preceded in death by his son Albert Eugene Dutton, Jr., brother Fred W. Dutton and sister Allene R. Ledbetter. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, September 8th at 1PM Sanders Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Redwood Fields, PO Box 327, Cutten, CA 95534 for kids sports or Kilby Country Animal Rescue c/o Jenna Kilby, PO Box 218, Cutten CA 95534. Al Dutton... one of the kindest and most caring person I´ve ever known.. I met Al in 1969 .. My brother, and my friend, and I were playing outside past curfew and Al picked us up and scared us half to death! He said " you´re going to spend the night in the pokey" and then he drove us home lol! Ever after that, whenever he saw me, he´d take my hand in both of his hands and say, " how are you dear?" We need more people´s in the world like Al Dutton.. We miss you, Al

I always enjoyed hearing your family stories (sky diving, dressing up as Santa, grandkids, etc.) when I worked with you at the courthouse, Patti, and still whenever I run into you around town. The memorial service yesterday was well done. As expected there was an overflow crowd. Listening to Rick Dutton tell his "red light" story reminded me of my moment too.

Uncle Al was 16 years my senior. My bother Bill Wagner, my sister Linda Baumbach (Dave)have many happy childhood memories of Al and uncle Fred (can't think of one without thinking of the other).

A few of my favorites would be the family vacations in Miranda at the Slack's vacation home. In 1962, Al drove Grandma Dutton, my mother Allene, my sister and me to San Francisco for my first Major League baseball game.(Giants 3 vs Cubs 4 in 10 innings.)Watching Al play for the Humboldt Foresters was always fun.

Thanksgiving dinners at Grandma's place was an event. The football games with Al and I vs. Fred and Bill. Can't remember who won, but it was fun. Listening to Al and Fred banter over the dinner table. My brother and I still laugh about their jocularity. We seem to have inherited their sense of humor, but believe we have taken it up a notch, in their honor.

A golf outing a few years ago was a special time for us. A picture of the four of us still hangs in my office.

These memories and others cannot be replaced or forgotten. They will always remain close to my heart.

Al was such a kind person and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Patti & family: I am so very, very sorry to read of Al's passing. He was truly "one of the good guys." He had a wonderful, caring personality and great smile. When he was with the EPD, it was during a time that officers were more caring and watched out more for people. Yes, it was a different time, but still, he and others seemed to be more helpful and friendly to the community rather than to judge. He served in the Korean War with my cousins, Arnie & Herb Frahman, as well. I am pleased and proud that Al was my friend and he will most definitely be missed by all who knew and loved him, but not forgotten. He was a person that you could always count on if you were in need of assistance. My sincere condolences to you and please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. He left you with wonderful memories, hold tight to them as they will help now and in the days ahead.

My sincere condolence to the Al Dutton Family.

One of the famous sports writers of many years past, wrote, "in the football game of life, it's not whether you have won or lost, but how you played the game". Al Dutton fits that description very well. Always fair and just to a high degree.
A good American.
We are diminished.
