Marilyn Maslow Obituary

Marilyn (Moore) Maslow passed away peacefully Jan. 9, 2016, in Naples, Florida, after a long illness. She was born July 11, 1932, in West Orange, New Jersey, the daughter of John and Norma Moore. She attended Scarsdale High School in Westchester County, New York, where she met her future husband, Richard Maslow. In 1952, she graduated from Colby Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire.

After moving to Scarsdale, New York, and completing a course of professional study at Tobe Coburn School of Fashion Design, Marilyn embarked on a successful career as a children's fashion editor for Harper's Bazaar. She and Richard married in 1955, and a few years later moved to the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania. Marilyn became the mother of six children and with her usual tireless energy, was an active member of the community. She was a loyal member of the Junior League of Wilkes-Barre, a trustee for Misericordia University and Wyoming Seminary Preparatory School, chair of the public relations committee for the American Cancer Society and a devoted volunteer and board member for the Association for the Blind. The Blind Association's Vision Resources Center bears Marilyn's name in honor of her work. In 1997, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Colby Sawyer College. In 1998, Wyoming Seminary honored her for 24 years of committed service.

Marilyn and Richard were generous contributors to many Wyoming Valley charities, especially to local schools both for capital campaigns and for scholarship endowments. They are acknowledged as benefactors on the campuses of Wyoming Seminary, Wilkes University, King's College, Misericordia University, Penn State University at Wilkes- Barre and Marywood University.

Marilyn was a fine athlete and a proud left-hander. She loved sewing, making clothes for herself and her children, and decoupage, was a curious and adventurous traveler, and learned to tap dance in her sixties. In public speaking situations, Marilyn often used humor to remind her audience of women's rights. She participated with her husband in studying and acquiring fine art and built a significant 20th-Century collection of postwar American painting that is currently exhibited at Marywood University in the Shields Center for the Arts. Marilyn and Richard enjoyed traveling the world with the YPO and CEO organizations, as well as with a small group of close friends known as the 25th overseas anniversary delegation, or TOADs.

Her parents and her brother, John Moore, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Richard, and by her six children, Jennifer Holtzman Maslow, Ashland, Oregon, Hilary Maslow, Charlotte, Vermont, Melanie Maslow-Kern, Dallas, Douglas Maslow, Dallas, Allison Maslow, Shavertown, and Leslie Maslow, New York. She is survived by eight grandchildren, Percy, Temple and Rivers Holtzman, Eric Naud and Olivia, Louise, Malcolm and Duncan Lumia. Also surviving are her beloved sisters-in-law, Louise Moore and Gyana Pendleton, and nine nieces and nephews.

The Maslow family thanks the outstanding staff of the Chateau at Moorings Park, Naples. We would like to express our profound gratitude to Susan Sandy, whose companionship and care over the last two decades will never be forgotten. We are also deeply grateful to Melanie Brown, who, together with Ms. Sandy and other exceptional caregivers, filled Marilyn's final years with music, laughter and love.

Arrangements are being handled by Fuller Funeral Home, Pine Ridge Road, Naples. A private service will be held in Naples for the family. Interment will be in the Huntsville Cemetery, Dallas.

Memorial donations may be made to the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 57 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701, to the Association for the Blind, 1825 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, PA 18643, or to Wyoming Seminary, 201 N. Sprague Ave., Kingston, PA 18704.

I had the humbled pleasure of being a weekend caregiver for Mrs. Maslow not more than 10 years ago while attending Misericordia. She taught me many things, but more patience than anything. Her memory has stayed with me since, and will for a long, long time. My condolences to her family and friends.
