Joy M. Jewell

Formerly of Beaver Falls

Joy M. Jewell, age 74, of Erie and formerly of Beaver Falls, Pa., passed away on Friday, May 8, 2020, at UPMC Hamot, Erie, Pa. Heaven has gained another good and faithful servant.

She was born in Rochester, Pa., on March 8, 1946, daughter of the late Lytle M. and Roseabell E. (Fegley) Morgan.

A graduate of Freedom High School in Beaver County, class of 1964, Joy continued her education at Geneva College graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Education. She also received her Masters of the Arts in Rhetoric and Communications at the University of Pittsburgh.

Joy met Paul, the love of her life, husband and best friend of 52 years during her time as a student at Geneva College. Joy was proud to reside in Western Pa. for her entire life having lived in Freedom, Beaver Falls and most recently in Erie, Pa. She and Paul moved to Erie for their retirement years to be close to their children and grandchildren. Her family was her everything. Joy and Paul also spent time living in Ellenton, Fla.

Joy's career in education spanned over 37 years. During Joy's early years in education, she spent time teaching at Unionville Elementary, Rochester High School, Penn State University's Beaver Campus and also Youngstown State University in Ohio. Joy was most rewarded professionally by returning to her alma mater Geneva College where she advanced from assistant professor, to Vice President of Student Affairs, and then retired as Dean of Students Emeritus. She was awarded the College of Forensic Association's Coach of the Year, and she was the recipient of Geneva College's Servant Leader Award.

In addition, Joy's church memberships included from birth to 2008 Freedom Presbyterian Church in Freedom, Pa., and presently with Wayside Presbyterian Church in Erie. She was an Elder and Junior Church Teacher while at the Freedom Church. Since moving to Erie, she was a member of the Elizabeth Circle at Wayside Presbyterian. She also volunteered with the UPMC Hamot Aid Society, Geneva College Faculty Wives, and the Beaver County March of Dimes Board.

In addition to her beloved husband Paul of 52 years, Joy is survived by her daughter, Christy (Dr. James) DeLullo and son, Jonathan Winsor (Dr. Erica) Jewell. Her seven grandchildren are Juliana Elizabeth, Braden James, Ava Rose and Christian James DeLullo along with MacKenzee Rose, Austin Winsor, and Grayson Winsor Jewell.

Joy's sister Donna Morgan Alleman further survives, as well as brother-in-law, Dr. Richard (Dayl) Jewell. Also surviving are nieces, Lisa Alleman (Steven) Wargo, Lori Alleman (Anthony) Kreamer, and Jessica Jewell (Paul) Lally, and nephew, Ryan (Lori) Alleman along with several great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Todd Lytle Jewell who died of a congenital illness as a young child. Her brother-in-law, Major Donald Alleman also preceded her in death.

She will be greatly missed by so many that she impacted through her years on this earth. Those who knew her loved her. In the words of a dear friend her name captured everything about her. She was both a Joy and a Jewell.

Dear Paul,
I write this with a heavy heart for you as you have lost your dearest best friend on this earth. I had the pleasure of meeting you several times during my 4 years at Geneva '86 - '90. I have so many wonderful memories of Joy as my speech professor, debate coach, and dean of women. She gave me great counsel when heavy decisions were made. Joy and Dr. Farra, gave me such a delightful undergraduate life at Geneva.
I also had the privilege of seeing a wonderful Christian marriage up close and personal! You loved Joy so unconditionally. Never ever doubt that she knew she was loved!
I am so grateful I will see her in Heaven one day and we will laugh together again.
Know that the Lord is holding you close in his arms. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

A Joy of a Jewell. Angel. I've heard that somewhere. She was a Joy to see her coming at you, A Jewell to have sweet conversation with., and leaving her when done, made me all warm & fuzzy inside. We met Joy, & Paul over 10 yrs ago at Wayside. Magic was in the air. May the entire Family accept our condolences. Joy will be remembered often because Joy will be thought of OFTEN.

Paul, Christy, Jonathon and Family

Please know how truly sad all of us are at UPMC Hamot to lose such a 'Joy' and a 'Jewel'. She was your beloved, wife, mother and grandmother and a true friend to the literally thousands of people she met over her years. I will always fondly remember all my conversations with Joy - she was so pleasant and easy to talk to. I fondly think of times when Paul would be in the Hamot Health Foundation office. Time would go by and I would say - 'where's Joy'. He would say she's just patiently waiting in the car. Sure enough I would go out in the parking lot and she would be sitting there, listening to music quietly with a huge smile on her face. No way I was going to miss an opportunity to go hear what Joy had to say - because it was always something meaningful and special. We all have fond memories of Joy and it is with profound sadness that her family and friends have to say goodbye to a woman who was so full of life. My hope and prayer is that we all carry a piece of Joy with us for the rest of our lives. That would make the world a much better place. We will miss you Joy, but never will we forget you.
