Francis Serbent Obituary

Serbent, Francis W. "Frank" RENSSELAER Francis "Frank" W. Serbent, 78, of Rensselaer, died Friday, March 22, 2013 at home. Francis was born in Westfield, Mass., and grew up in Bridgeport, Conn., the son of the late Francis K. and Lottie (Zawrotny) Serbent. Frank was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War before he earned his bachelor's in civil engineering at University of Connecticut. He became a civil engineer for Metcalfe and Eddy of Boston for six years and then for the New York State Department of Health and later for the Environmental Conservation Department. During his tenure there he served as an administrative law judge before retiring in 2001. Frank was predeceased by a brother, Walter Serbent. Frank is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Webster) Serbent; his three sons, Paul (Wendy), Robert (Julia) and Gary (Charla) Serbent. Frank was a brother-in-law to Jane Serbent; the proud grandfather of Christine, Mark, Todd, Anna, and Jonathan, as well as an uncle to many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at St. Michael's Church, Williams Road, Troy where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated. Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Wm. J. Rockefeller Funeral Home, Rensselaer and Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Church before the holy Mass. Interment will be in Blooming Grove Cemetery, DeFreestville. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Defreestville Fire Dept., 480 N. Greenbush Road, Rensselaer, NY 12144 or the Indiana Organ Procurement Association, 3760 Guion Road, Indianapolis, IN 46222. Light a condolence candle at wjrockefeller.com

I remember Frank well from my time as a program coordinator with Mediation Matters. Frank distinguished himself as a volunteer mediator and arbitrator who approached every case with patience and compassion -- and a most helpful sense of humor.
