Our condolences are belated but Johns memory will always be with us. His last e-mail to us was on 3/9/09 and once again he sent an uplifting video,"a deer and a cat". All of the people who he met at Watkins Glen I am sure will miss him greatly. Two proud members of Johns "Grey Goose Racing Team" Kevin and Mary Merrell

A sad belated farewell to you my friend. The river will miss you, as will all those you befriended along the way... "and even the weariest river winds somewhere safe to sea."

I didn't know John very well, but based on my experience, he was a great guy. John was an OK poker player (sorry John), an amazing man and a HELL of a fisherman. Any chance I had I would pick his brain about conditions, "the bite", and anything striper. We talked several times at "The Wall" and in the parking lot after our attempts to get a linesider there. I'll always remember him for the honest information he gave and also for the god-awful tangle he had on the bottom eyelets of of all of his Striper rods.

In the parking lot we argued over which car would win in a race (his Cooper S at the time and my Eagle Talon again at the time). He loved that car.

Truly a great loss to the dam community. He knew more about casting for Striper than I could hope to know.

Till the next high tide.....

To the Norton family -

I am very shocked and saddened to hear of John's passing. Over the past 6 or 7 years, I always looked forward to his visit to our NASCAR event at Watkins Glen. Every time I spoke with him or visited was the highlight of a very hectic weekend. I will certainly miss the great conversations I've had with John over the years...

Goodbye my friend...

John Norton... An unusual man, perhaps an enigma in his own right. A man who rarely considered anyone a stranger, but rather a friend, and treated them as such.

His own path of righteousness was a shining light, a ray of hope, a beacon for us to follow in our own quest for happiness.

How I wish I could turn back the tide my friend, to tell you what an extraordinary individual you really were. I was perhaps your strongest critic. Cynical at times, yet failing to admit that you possessed the human characteristics I so longed for.

I will miss our conversations, but linger not my friend, for I know... I will find you on the beach.

Till the next high tide

Claudia,Jessica, and Michael,
The Farrell's of Wynantskill send our thoughts and prayers your way. John became an instant friend some years back during one of many hockey seasons. Joey and Mike skated together and too became friends. Long after hockey was over and the "horn" confiscated and the "John Norton Award" had been bestowed on one of our goalies...the found hubcap that John saw fit to shine up and present for a job well done, "the boys", Joe and John continued to get together, golf, hockey games [RPI, NCAAs in Albany],pizza at the Notty Pine. There was no other like him, there are hockey fans from Michigan who will never forget John and his welcoming ways. Time and distance seperated us but I know that this world is a lesser place without John....

Dear Norton family
I had the pleasure of working with John and hanging out with him outside of work and he was one of the most amazing people i have ever met. His laughter could light up a room and his wit was always right on. He will be missed by everyone that had a chance to run into him and be missed most by those of us that have such great memories of being able to hang around with him on a daily basis. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Roberto Solis

April 1, 2009

To the Norton Family,

My name is Roberto Solis, and I met Mr. Norton at CVS when he brought in rolls of film of what he claimed to be AWESOME PICTURES! He needed me to get them done as fast as possible for him, and I told him I would do my best. Well I got them done in a little under an hour and after i helped him make enlargements of a lot of the pictures. He stayed and talked to me and another co worker for what seemed to be a very long time. He was the friendliest man I have ever met. One time he came into CVS and I was showing him his pictures, a line started to build so I called a second cashier. After the second cashier helped with the line I explained to her that i was helping a customer. It was at that point that Mr. Norton said, "not customer, friend." He would always come in and try to get me to let him buy me a drink or a candy bar always laughing making me feel better about my day, I am deeply saddened to know he passed. I will be attending this Friday, it's the least i can do for such a great human being and friend.

John was not only a great supporter and indefatigable promoter of FAWNS and getting kids into the outdoors, but was in fact the self-appointed ambassador and mascot of the Big MOE (Massachusetts Outdoor Exposition), spreading good cheer, fun, and friendliness throughout the event every year. All his friends and colleagues at FAWNS will dearly miss his always-sage advice, good humor, and willingness to devote his time and energy to introducing our youth to the outdoor sports that are the heart of wildlife conservation.
