Leslie Helin Obituary

Helin, Leslie Ann GREENFIELD Surrounded by family, Leslie Ann Helin lost her most valiant battle with cancer on January 7, 2013. The world is a better place having had Leslie in it. This remarkable woman brought love and optimism into every life she touched. Even as she fought her final battle, friends and loved ones were touched by how her amazing attitude helped others. Her selfless character is an inspiration to all who knew her. Leslie was born in Jamestown in 1952. She was the third of five children of Donald N. Hedlund and Beverly L. Hedlund. Leslie received a master's degree in medical technology at Hartwick College, 1975. Leslie married Daniel J. Helin in 1977 in Jamestown, and settled in the Capital District. Leslie worked as a medical technologist for special hematology at Ellis Hospital before going into optical sales in the mid-1980s. Leslie is survived by her husband of 35 years, Daniel Helin; her two daughters, Erica Perreault and Amy Wright; and her two grandchildren, Isabella and Marcus. Leslie is also survived by her mother, Beverly, and her four siblings, Linda Fox, Larry Hedlund, Lance Hedlund, and Lowell Hedlund. In accordance with Leslie's wishes, the family will hold a celebration of life for this beloved woman in June at a date to be announced. Instead of flowers, the family asks that you place a donation in her name to the Schenectady Cancer Foundation at schenectadycancerfoundation.org or to Pine Knolls Alliance Church in South Glens Falls. Leslie loved her friends, family and especially her grandchildren. She said many times, "It is my goal in life to make someone smile every day." Arrangements by the Catricala Funeral Home, Inc., 1597 Route 9, Clifton Park.

My heart is aching from the loss of Leslie. Her passion for life and smile will remain in my heart forever. Our crazy camping trips and party talks will be missed. Leslie's encouraging words to me, in spite of her own illness battles, gave me the strength to remain positive when I needed it most. I will miss her wit, her courage, and her passion to stay strong for others giving of herself without expecting anything except a smile in return. She saw her children become parents and became a grandmother looking so content in the pictures holding Isabella and Marcus. My thoughts are with you all and I'm sure the celebration of her life in June will be one of reflection on all she gave to others and her angelic smile will shine brightly on all who she loved and loved her in return. God bless you all. Love you and miss you deeply. Melanie

Leslie was one of the most compassionate people I have ever known. The world was a better place with her in it, and I am a better person for having known her. Leslie would speak of her "angels," and I suspect she never realized she was one herself. She will be missed, but I know I will always smile when I think of her. God's peace and strength to Danny, Amy, and Erica.

When I was 12 a special couple moved into the house across the street from me! That WONDERFUL couple was Dan and Leslie Helin! Leslie was like my big sister as I did not have any siblings, she taught me to cross stitch and knit. I love spending time with her, the husky dog they had "sport" and the beautiful babies that were born Erica and Amy! I cherish all the years of knowing Leslie and may her light and smile carry on within her beautiful grandchildren! God speed Beautiful lady!

"May the Lord bless you and keep you.

May the Lord make his face to shine upon you,
and be gracious to you.

May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you,
and give you peace."

With all my heart I pray for your entire family.

My heart sank when Jimmy called to let me know. The Helin family has been a part of the Spillane family for so many years I've lost count. No matter how bad I felt, I could always rely on Leslie to make me feel better. Mom and dad so loved Danny, Leslie, Amy and Erica, You have always been such a huge part of our family, And ours with yours... As if we were some kind of distant cousin. It is hard to imagine not ever being able to talk to Leslie again, And my life is darker for that. Danny and Leslie were so important to mom and dad, They loved each other so much, I just know mom and dad have Leslie by there side now. Hang in there Danny...

When I met Leslie nearly 30 years ago, I was fresh out of school and trying hard not to seem silly when I met my husband's boss's wife - but I found out quickly that you could be yourself with Leslie. She was a great combination of funny, caring and wise and she was an amazing example of what ‘the good life' looked like to me – great relationship with Dan, wonderful Mom to Erica and Amy, work-life balance, and a caring friend to everyone she met. Thanks for being such a wonderful friend, Leslie - you will be missed.

Dan,
So sorry to hear of Leslie's passing. I have been praying for all of you for several months - that God's love would carry you thru the battles and pain. You are still in my thoughts and prayers.
