Al will always be a patriot, friend and brother. You will be missed; your life may have been cut short but you will live forever in memory! Your leadership will carry on through history. My only regret my brother is that I never got to properly salute you even when I once had the chance, but you saluted me first, even though I was Enlisted; that's just the type of man you were, yet that something that you and I understand the meaning of. I wish I could spend one more day with you. R.I.P. - Mike Allen, AZ1, USN (Retired)

February 28, 2014

My most sincere condolences to his family, friends and shipmates. I served with Al back in AIMD Cecil Field. He was selected for his commissioning program and I transferred to Spain. Never heard from him again. Almost 20 years later, I get a phone call at my office from a LCDR who needed some information. When I asked for his email and he gave me his full name I asked "is this the same Alphonso Doss who used to dance like Prince in the middle of maintenance admin in Cecil Field"? A brief silence followed by a chuckle "who's this" he asked. When I told him, he said "don't go nowhere, I'll be right there". Less than 30 minutes later, he was at my hangar. We gave each other a big hug and talked about the good ole days like time had stood still. The true meaning of "shipmate". Although we weren't close, we shared that connection of serving together and that sincere appreciation of what seemed to be the best days of our lives. I regret not spending more time with you my brother, but I am grateful for the time we did share. I will never forget you and you will always be my shipmate. I love you my brother, may you rest in peace.

Bos'n, stand by to pipe the side, a shipmate is going ashore.

He was very smart and unafraid to call me verbose. He asked if I knew the meaning of the word brevity. I most certainly did. I gave him my Janis Joplin CD and he had a good sense of humor but was also very serious and diligent. A gentleman and very spiritual who wanted to help at risk youth, he was kind, decent, certainly loved his family from what I gathered, and never said a mean thing about anyone. May his soul rest in paradise and I will never forget him. My sincerest condolenses to the immediate family, extended family, friends, and everyone else he knew. He was one of the good ones. God be with you.
