Manuel Florez Obituary

FLOREZ Leigh mourns the passing of her wonderful friend and loving husband, Manuel Florez, born December 9, 1948 and passed away on November 23, 2015. Other close family members saddened by his loss are his daughters, Christina and Nicole, with her husband Jeff; the girls' Mom, Maria (Mafy); grandbabies Eliana and Jonathan; his mother and father, Ofelia and Manuel; sister Ofe, brother-in-law Jose Rivera; nieces Valeria and Nathalia, with her husband Jose David; nephew Javier; brother-in-law Joseph Thirion. Manuel was born in Cuba, moving to the US with his parents as a child of 10, settling first in Georgetown, SC, before moving to San Juan, Puerto Rico as a teen and attending high school and undergraduate school there. He and Mafy married and moved to California where he earned his Master's in Chemical Engineering at Cal Tech. His professional life took him to NJ, where he worked at Exxon Research and Engineering, and International Flavors and Fragrances. Manuel and Mafy also owned an art gallery in Morristown for a number of years. Leigh and Manuel were married in 1986 and have made many friends in NJ, Augusta, GA, and here in Florida as his career path moved him to these locations. He worked in Jacksonville for Renessenz LLC from 1999 through 2012. They are members of Eagle Harbor Golf Club, where Manuel was regularly fascinated and frustrated chasing the little white ball. In lieu of flowers or donations, give special thanks this season for your family and friends - extra hugs around your celebratory tables! A celebration of Manuel's life will be held at Club Continental in Orange Park on December 12, from 10AM to 1PM. Family and friends are welcome. Arrangements are under the care of Russell Haven of Rest Cemetery, Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 2335 Sandridge Road, Green Cove Springs, FL 32043. Today with great sadness, I learned of Manny's passing through a mutual friend, Ramon Loureiro. Manny and I shared an office at Exxon in the late 1970s. What I will always remember is his true friendship and the kindnesses that both he and Mafy extended to Claire and myself. Our sincerest condolences to the entire family.

Leigh and Family,
My heartfelt sympathy to the family. I can't begin to tell you how much I respected Manuel. He was a great person, mentor, "Teacher" and friend. When he came to "Renessenz, our career of working together began; as a chemist, I learned a lot of "engineering" from him as a result. I especially remember the last year as we met several times for lunch or dinner to talk about not only the old times but possibly the future times as well. I will truly miss him. We were not only colleagues, but good friends as well.
